China Girl — Restaurant in Cancún

First of I have to clarify that I lived in Hawaii for 10 years and in the San Francisco Bay Area, and therefore I am somewhat prejudiced how Chinese food should look, taste and contain.

That being said I will have to say that the Chinese food served at China Girl had as much to do with China as French fries have to do with France (they are actually from Belgium).

We had a Wonton Soup and Duck (De la casa).

The Wonton soup was made with a broth that really didn't have a distinct flavor, Chinese or otherwise, the wonton were mostly tasteless as well. The only vegetable to be found on the soup was lettuce. No Bok Choy, no soy sprouts, no carrots, nothing. I give it 1 star for having been at the correct eating temperature.

The duck actually tasted pretty good, but had absolutely nothing to do with being a Chinese dish. The normal hints of spices that one expects from Chinese Cousine were completely absent. Rice had to be ordered seperate.

The Jasmine tea was served iced with slices of lime and way to sweet.

The service was sub par. Probably because we speak fluent Spanish and might have been evaluated as people that don't tip. The table next to us who speak English received much better service.

The music being played in the background was reggaeton much to loud. And the many televisions with music viedoes distracted from the "Chinese" dinning experience.

The prices were way to high for Mexico and not at all commensurate with the value of the offering.

This place is not cheap! The price is Definitely not under $5USD The food was okay for Chinese food here in Cancun. It’s obviously not as great as a restaurant in the states. So for Cancun it’s not terrible. This place was actually expensive to be honest. We spent about $48 USD on a honey chicken, general chicken, 4 egg rolls, and won ton soup. The soup had a weird taste, almost like chicken noodle soup but a little less bland? The honey chicken was good, it was sweet. It’s usually not breaded, but we asked them to fry it and it turned out good. The general chicken was also good, it had a lot more flavor than the honey chicken. The containers the food came in were unique and reusable. I’m actually going to take them back home with me. The portion sizes for the chicken were enough for a second meal. Tenía la esperanza de una buena comida China, basado en los reviews, es posible que lo mío fue mala suerte o simplemente esperaba demasiado. El lugar está algo escondido, el letrero exterior está visible, pero para entrar no ves ningún señalamiento. Hay un elevador que no funciona, entonces preguntamos y había que pasar por la recepción de un hotel, luego una puerta de madera sin letrero alguno, empujas y viola! Ahí está el restaurante.

El lugar es pequeño, si esperabas encontrar las tradicionales mesas redondas, típicas de la comida China, pues no las hay, son unas mesas pequeñas para 4 personas pero ideales solo para 2; supongo las pueden unir si el grupo lo requiere. A la derecha de la entrada hay una especie de librero, con algunas esculturas de Buda, hay en la pared cerca de la entrada, un gran cuadro de Buda, sorprendentemente no vi ningún Dragón o algo parecido. El lugar estaba ambientado con música pop de los 90’s en Inglés, mientras unos televisores proyectaban el mismo anuncio del restaurante una y otra vez. Otro detalle ausente de la comida China es el te. Pedí te, y me dijeron que sola había sodas de la familia Coca-Cola y te helado. El menú es extenso, demasiado extenso para un restaurante de ese tamaño, atendido por un mesero y por no se cuantas personas más en la cocina. Estuve tentado de probar el pato, pero me fui por una entrada de costillas bbq, y res en salsa de ostiones. Más tarde en decidir que mi entrada en llegar a mi mesa, literalmente menos de 5 minutos, esto solo significa una cosa, la comida no es hecha al instante, y si, efectivamente. El plato consistía de una pequeña porción cortada en 4 partes, por fuera estaba rojo por el glaseado, pero por dentro estaba sin color, no había ni un rastro de que le hubieran echado algo de salsa encima. Por fuera estaban calientes, por dentro heladas… no se necesita ser experto para saber que les faltó tiempo en el microondas. Para mi plato fuerte, la presentación consistía en una gran cantidad de trozos de cebolla y apio, bañados en salsa y carne de res en láminas delgadas. Debo admitir que la salsa estaba fría pero tenía un buen buen sabor. No quise experimentar más, aún que si me llamó la atención la idea de los lichi en almíbar. Decidí quedarme con las ganas para no llevarme otra decepción. Por lo extenso del menú, me pareció que el lugar era una buena opción para disfrutar de una buena comida Cantonesa, me frustró encontrarme con comida calentada...
