Maybe backpackers like this place, for locals, it’s not necessarily something remarcable. First, the pace is on the side of the street, so it’s dusty, overall the dining area looks dirty, there’s a vinyl covering the tables that is dirty like it has never been cleaned, horrible black spots of mould and dirt. It’s hot, you can feel the sun’s radiation while you eat there, to solve this issue they have two huge fans that are all rusty and old, probably never been cleaned as it’s possible to see layer upon layer of dust in them, obviously being blown all over the place and over your food as it oscillates. The food was below average for gorditas. The gordita was sour, which only means the dough used to make them had been resting outside a refrigerator and already started to ferment due to the high temperatures, that was the deal breaker for me, probably that acidity in the dough could have been unnoticed, but I’m Mexican and corn tortillas are almost part of my DNA, so I can tell the difference. Anyway, probably it was just my bad luck when I visited, I want to believe some other time, someone else has tasted the flavor of a genuine corn gordita. Chicken tinga was tasteless, mole rojo was just barely better. Chicharrón prensado was good and if it wasn’t because of the fermented dough, that would’ve...
Read moreGreat simple local food place. Cheap and filling tacos, we've tried all four options (gorditas, wheat or corn quesadillas and burritos) and corn ones are the best. Crisp and soft at the same time. At 23 pesos (1-1.5 US) each it was a feast, as 4 would absolutely be enough for most.
The non food complaints are.. them being a little to stringent with covid capacity (tonnes of empty space between tables and hence unnecessary queues if you are unlucky) and not being open more regularly (we visited over the NY period) as often times we saw them being open until midday only or closed for an entire day.
Other than that, never spent more than 12 US for two to get absolutely stuffed with great standard Mexican food and it's a great escape from an otherwise overpriced and inflated...
