On December 9, 2023, I had the pleasure of dining at Fish & Gin, a culinary escapade that presented both hits and misses. We kicked off our meal with tuna tacos, where the juxtaposition of cold tortillas against overly warm breaded tuna left room for improvement. The flavor, while not awe-inspiring, hinted at potential—opting for a chicharrón-style tuna with a touch of acidity could elevate the experience. The saving grace came in the form of delightful pickled onions.
Next on the gastronomic agenda were the coconut shrimp tostadas—an unconventional dish that deviates from the ordinary. While the flavor didn't reach spectacular heights, the abundance of shrimp and the unique choice of a fried flour tortilla added a distinctive twist. The purple cabbage canopy not only aesthetically complemented the dish but also contributed to its overall taste and texture.
Our beverage choices added a layer of intrigue to the dining experience. The gin with coconut, presented in a ceramic seashell, was a visual delight. However, the sweetness veered towards overpowering, possibly not the best match for seafood. Counterbalancing this, the zesty acidity of the lemonade proved a refreshing foil, though a touch too potent—prompting a dilution with additional mineral water.
The bill tallied up to around 780 pesos, a reasonable sum considering the unique offerings and the attentive service provided by the amiable staff. Fish & Gin carves out a niche within the locale, offering a noteworthy selection for those seeking culinary distinctiveness on Isla Mujeres. If you have a penchant for exploring diverse flavors, this establishment merits consideration amidst your island...
Read moreSimply the best food by far out of the 10 or so highest rated restaurants on Isla Mujeres I have been to...I agree 100% with a previous post that said something like this restaurant could exist and thrive in a major U.S. city like NYC, Boston, Miami etc...
The specialty cocktails as you might expect considering the name are driven by gin...even if you are not a gin drinker try one they are delicious, refreshing and more than ample...I had the "green one" Hendricks, muddled cucumber and kiwi...I also had several Mezcals, the cuatrocientos (400) reposado was great...
The food is beautifully presented and delicious, a highlight definitely includes their tempura lobster tacos, the batter as good as I have had anywhere and also get a side of their creamy basmati rice, ridiculously good. Picanha tacos good as well BUT I would not seek them out as I would the two prior. Their house salsa a puree of tomatoes and Ancho Chile's was surprisingly nice as well.
The service is on point, friendly, knowledgeable and there for your every need...
I look forward to dining with them again very soon.
An important point too is their pricing for everything they serve is completely transparent which you can not say about the majority of places here....not cheap BUT great value and you know exactly what you are paying for before the...
Read moreMy husband stumbled upon this place (we come to Isla three times a year and never tried it out before) and I was hesitant bc one of the ladies did not seem very friendly and or happy to be at work. (This is while we were standing outside looking at the menu). Hubby told me to take a chance maybe the service attitude will lighten up after we come in (from her it didn’t unfortunately) so that was a major put off bc it’s not just about the food it’s about the experience as a whole. Thank God there was a waiter please forgive me I don’t remember his name but he is tatted up (neck as well) and he was extremely nice and friendly. We ordered the coconut tostadas which were EXTREMLY awesome they even had a warm pineapple drizzle on top that had my tastebuds screaming Yyyeeessss! My husband ordered the fish tacos and they were awesome as well. The aioli sauce on top was tasty and fresh. We ordered a mezcalita’s which snuck up on me later in the evening (lol). The chips that came as we waited for our food were so delicious and freshly made. The decor is cute and inviting also they had someone playing the violin and...
