Easily the worst experience I've had at a cocktail bar, and I've been to a LOT of these Top 50 list kind-of places. I got assaulted by someone related to the staff after my friend, who comes from a country where tipping culture does not exist ,didn't tip Alejandra, our waitress, what she was expecting.
So, after my friend paid for a bill of over 400 dollars, the girl serving us, Alejandra, got super upset because she didn't get enough tips. She demanded us to give her more tips, which I did (I ended up giving over 50 dollars- the exact amount she demanded from me just to make her happy). I was obviously upset at the way Alejandra demanded tips from us, and I told the rest of my party that I wasn't comfortable with what happened and wanted to leave. At that point, I wasn't talking to anyone from the staff, and even paid the money Alejandra was aggressively demanding for with a smile. Nobody from my party resisted or got upset at Alejandra's request. I just wanted to pay the money she demanded us to pay and settle the problem, as she was visibly really upset.
15 minutes later, when we just decided to leave to go elsewhere, I got assaulted by Alejandra's friend, a tall, blonde and visibly intoxicated north american for "not treating the staff right". The guy pushed me around and tried to punch me in the face. I had never spoken to this person before, I have no clue who he was but he just popped out of nowhere and came to physically attack me.
Not only were we super nice to the staff before this (we had been there a few nights before- my friends even got a text message from the staff asking us to come back if we were in town), but were planning to leave a really generous tip to Alejandra before she started demanding more money. We all work or have worked in hospitality and know how important tips are for the staff.
Alejandra basically ruined a really cool night out by being greedy. Nobody spoke down to her, we were all super nice and super polite to her and every other member of the staff (-and i dare them to say otherwise- we were even inviting alejandra to tequila shots at one time, which she was more than happy to accept..).
The person who attacked me wasn't even asked to leave the bar (maybe gallo altanero considers this as normal behavior...) and I barely got any apologies from anyone.
Avoid this place. The people working here are just...
Read moreSpent a couple days in Guadalajara and was told to check out El Gallo Altanero. This establishment was extremely busy when we arrived and the wait was about 1hr. You'll undertsand why when you go! Perhaps make a reservation so you don't have to wait. We didn't know they took reservations. It doesn't look like much in the waiting area but once inside its really cool. The first area is small with a few tables and unique decor. Off to the side is a set of stairs that lead to the top of the place with an open roof and bar area. Not a lot of space, it was very crowded. My friend and I sat downstairs in a little cove area. Music is amazing! They had a DJ on site. What made our experience so outstanding was our server Danielle (she goes by Danny). She was quick to greet us with a smile and was super friendly. She had really great energy. We had asked about drink suggestions and she had recommend a couple and expained what they were. The drink list is quite small but the drinks will blow your mind. We got talkng about our home town Vancouver, as Danny had been to Vancouver so that made it extra special as we were able to contact with her on a personal level. Danny speaks english as well if your spanish is not that good. Would highly reccommend this place! My favorite drink was...

There was some confusion at check-in with the hostess, and we were told that since the main part of the bar was at capacity, we would wait in a “stand-up bar” before being allowed upstairs. Even for that, there was a wait. We spent about 15 minutes waiting before we were allowed in.
Once seated, we were given a menu with very few drink options. It wasn’t clear if the menu was the same throughout the bar, but the cocktail and beer selection was limited. I ordered a Paloma, only to be told they had run out—quite surprising. I chose something else, but it wasn’t good and tasted like it had barely any alcohol.
Flagging down a server took some time, though the drinks didn’t take long once ordered. The “stand-up bar” had very limited seating, but we managed to grab a table. However, in the hour or so we were there, we were never moved to the main part of the bar as initially promised. Eventually, we asked for the bill, which also took a while to arrive.
Overall, the music was decent, but the drinks were disappointing and the overall vibe of the bar was...
