First let me say that my husband and i have been to Layla’s many times and had a great experience. So i suggested to my friend that we go there for an early New Year’s Eve dinner. My friend needs gluten free to avoid getting sick. In a phone call ahead of time I was told this is not a problem. The waiter did not seem to be concerned or understand this even after my friend showed him something written in Spanish explaining this. She ordered soup - it came with tortilla chips in it which was not mentioned on the menu. When we made the comment that she could not eat this - he responded- well you ordered it. She ordered sea bass for her entree. I ordered filet. After waited a while to get our food, hers is very under cooked and tough. She sent it back after showing that she could not cut it with the knife. He brings back another and it’s the same. The third time she was able to cut it with a fork so it was good. My filet was on the tough side. I don’t order beef often and until a few years ago would never order it down here but I found that better restaurants have started to have tender beef. Not the case here - though I did not return it. We arrived at 5:45 and we’re not done until after 8:00 and we ordered our food pretty quickly after arriving as we hungry. We were their first customers after they opened so they were not busy. Though previous experiences were good here, Layla’s is off my list of places to go. Too many...
Read moreDon’t bother making a reservation. They won’t honor it. We had eaten there once before. The food was good but a bit pricey. My wife wanted to go back and try another dish. We went there at ten AM and she made a reservation for seven PM that night. They asked if we wanted a specific table, and she said, “yes, please, top floor, table on the right,” because she figured that table would be in the shade. At that time our reservation was the first for that day/evening. The rest of the page was empty. The guy taking the reservation wrote everything in the book: name, phone, time, preferred table.
When we arrived the place had only one table occupied.: the table we had reserved. All the other tables were in the direct sun or back away from the view. The clients sitting at “our table” weren’t even ordering food. They were just drinking. There was a lot of confusion. One guy said, come back in 40 minutes and sit at that table when the other customers finished. Another guy said that table wouldn’t be available because it was reserved. We just left in dismay and had a great meal somewhere else. Bottom line is they do not honor their reservations. A totally unacceptable...
Read moreI would skip this place. Three of us went to this place and it was a train wreck. There was a sign that said all cash, we told the owner we'd go to ATM and be back and he tore the sign down and said no problem. Strange (strike 1). Menu was messed up with higher prices on the written in Spanish side of the menu, why? (Strike 2) We asked the waiter which price we would pay and he said the lower one, of course. The bill came and it didn't match the prices. Then the owner came out and tried to create the illusion that the system was messed up. (Strike 3). After we paid and left we realized that they also added two extra shots of don Julio for an extra 360 P. All in all they overcharged us 450 pesos but we just wanted out.
We live here and love PV but this is an example of a slippery owner and a complicit waiter.
On top of that my steak was like bubble gum and my wives shrimp were supposed to be a PV classic sauteed version over rice. It was shrimp sauteed with Frank's red hot sauce or something similar and no rice.
There are plenty of good restaurants in town, unfortunately this is not one of them. Smile and wave as you walk by, but...
