El Gallito Cantina — Restaurant in Mérida

Great cantina at a historic location, but updated, more modern atmosphere. Located a few blocks west of the Paseo Montejo area, so now more of a hangout for expats and occasional tourists like me rather than a working class kind of place. Relatively small interior, limited seating at the bar. Not crowded on a hot Thursday afternoon. Friendly, attentive service. Good selection of ice cold national beers, special and standard mixed drinks. Modest food menu; wings, french fries, pok chuk. Excellent botanas, among the best in my extensive experience. I was looking forward for El Gallito to open again, but I was very dissapointed with the quality of everything. The server got our beers but she did not open the bottles. We had to twist them. The snacks that are plentiful and delicious in most places were scare and bad. The refried beans plate had a teaspoon of beans. The german potatoes lacked salt and quantity, the codzitos were unedible... It sads me that a place that I used to love have decided to...

Merida's oldest cantina, El Gallito was one of our favourite beer stops. They serve almost every Corono-owned beer under the sun (Corona, Pacifico and Leon to name a few) and the free tapas that they serve while you drink were all amazing (especially the sikil pak!) Very cool spot for any beer lover...
