Prevailing opinion is that the quality of food is high at La Hummusiya. I don’t much quibble with that assessment. If you look at people’s indicated pricing it’s all over the map, from 100 to 500 pesos per person, depending on what people have ordered. Some get a lot for their money and some don’t. I contend that the owner charges what he thinks he can get, a rather short-sighted approach. Buyer beware!
In my case, I ordered chicken shawarma and hummus - arrived in a kid’s-sized cereal bowl - and falafel (five of them) with two pita, a baklava (in reality, dedo de novia) and a swig of mint tea. All for 428 pesos (US$25+) … that’s like treble the vaunted Israeli street-food pricing and, by comparison to other such places in CDMX, where I happen to live, it’s exorbitant.
Disinclined to quibble with the guy’s pricing, although I’ll draw the line at the shakshuka he pushed me to order, I will not return to this place and I’m eager to share my experience.
Lesson for you: get an actual menu (look at the one online to see how out-of-bounds pricing above is) and don’t accept his walkthrough of food pictures on a portable screen.
The quality’s there. The quantity needs to be established and the value - what you get for your money … basic fairness - needs to be agreed.
In my case, he wins 428 pesos for 200 at most of value. He is right, I can afford it. But what I can afford once I can afford 500 times. No repeat business from me. You, be...
Read moreI live a couple of blocks from here and had been meaning to try it out. I like the fact that it’s such a departure from your typical Mexican food that it’s a good place to go if you’re just craving a change. I went here for dinner.
I ordered the schnitzel which is very similar to German schnitzel and milanesa in Mexico City. It’s basically breaded chicken breast. I got it with two side orders which were the Moroccan carrots and the hummus. First, let me say that the four salsas they bring out with toasted pita were divine! 😋 I especially liked the green garlic lime salsa & the tomato salsa. The schnitzel was good although it was missing something… If I’m being honest my favorite part of the meal were the carrots 🥕 and salsas. The hummus was OK but they went very heavy on the tahini… So unfortunately it tasted like mostly tahini, which is a very heavy.
The service was excellent! I especially appreciated that the young guy who takes your order is super knowledgeable & you can tell he’s passionate about the food. Also, the owner will come out from time to time & ask if everything’s okay. That’s a nice touch.
I recommend you give this place a try. It’s a very nice change from the normal...
Read moreDon't go here if you're gluten free. I was perfectly prepared not to be able to eat here, but figured I'd ask as I'd seen another review claiming at was possible.
The first staff we asked said nothing is gluten free, but then he started saying the falafel/hummous/salad is gf.
The second staff said everything is gluten free except the ragu - he spent a long time trying to convince me the pitta bread is gf, even along with the chef!! Only after my husband told them it's an allergy did they come back and say it's not gf...
We ordered me the plain soy shawarma/veggies dish and my husband a lavash and a side of falafel. They forget to make the falafel (after paying). Cost $636 total.
The falafel was extremely burnt on the outside but uncooked wet mush inside. The rest was okay but not great especially for the price.
He found not one but two extremely long hairs in the lavash. See pictures attached, he pulled the first hair out, then discovered a second later on.
Had a gluten reaction :))))))))) This was the only thing I had eaten that day so i'm 100% it was here. In hindsight after those interactions it was clearly...
