Black Legend
We arrived around 9:00 p.m. we were cutting it close for drinks and dinner. To be honest, if you really want to relax and have a slow paced meal then get there earlier for dinner. we went on a Monday night and only one other table was filled and someone came in later for the bar.
Music was a little bit loud but enjoyable. Place is really dark. They give you a little LED lamp for the table. Touch the top for your own ambiance. It's just a dark "black" atmosphere there. Other than that it was nice.
What I didn't like and what I really personally dislike in restaurants is the assumption that diners responsibility is to have a phone with internet and look at the menu online. I think this is ridiculous. They have a little notebook computer which is brought to the table so you can share and look at it using the restaurant's internet. I just prefer restaurants where you have a menu You can hold in your hand and look at.
For this trip we're enjoying having cocktails. We typically don't drink but we look forward to some sort of a mezcal cocktail. Here they have a good cocktails list and good alcohol list in general. We tried what they call red legends and dragon as far as our cocktails. Presentation was cutting edge with dry ice smoke screen for presentation of the drinks. Drinks were wonderful.
It's our fault, but when you come in late you're looking at the kitchen closing down and wanting to get out for the night. You're sort of at the kitchen's control. Nevertheless, we ordered two really good meals. I got the black hamburger and we also got the steak chicharron. Both were really good.
Let me tell you about the hamburger. The hamburger came with multiple ingredients and layers. The beef and what appeared to be the barbecue are appropriately more fatty and were balanced with the pickled acidic onions. The balanced flavors were so enjoyable with an additional touch of sweet sauce. However, what I loved most about this burger was that it stayed together the entire time I was eating it. Many places you go to they stack a hamburger and it falls apart and it is difficult to eat. Here, I give the people who created this a complete 10 out of 10 where you can enjoy a hamburger without it falling apart. I loved it. Not many restaurants can do this. The burger was phenomenal.
The steak chicharron was also really good. It came with really well made tortillas. It's an interesting dish if you have the chance. I think it was ribeye.
Because it was late we didn't try anything else.
Other diners were or others just enjoying wine or cocktails seem to be having a wonderful time just talking. It was a comfortable experience overall the night we went.
Service was all done by one waiter and he was efficient and professional. Very helpful and explainwd which of the hamburgers we could choose a temperature for cooking the meat. His command of English was very helpful.
Overall a very enjoyable evening with cocktails and dinner. I would say get there at least at 8:00 if you're planning on a late enjoyable evening with dinner.
One last thing. I don't agree with is when a restaurant curates reviews at the table. I noted in some of the negative reviews that people could not understand how this restaurant got so many reviews. It's because they ask for reviews at the table. Reviews should be generated naturally and not requested at tableside. This ends up with reviews that are not helpful at best and potentially skewed. I don't mind restaurants saying something like, make sure to give us a positive review or something like that but to put down a card with a link at the table is really a no-no, and cheating. It will come back to bite them in the butt. I hope this restaurant stops this practice. Just take care of your customers and they will take...
Read moreWe had a group dinner here for one our nights in CDMX, and I honestly do not know how this place is rated as high as it is. We picked it because of the ratings, but it was a huge disappointment and the worst meal experience on our trip. We started with calamari, the black goliath, esquites, and guacamole. The calamari tasted like it was a funnel cake. The black goliath was alright but seemed to be lacking flavor based on what's in it. The esquites was so watery it almost was like a soup. The guacamole was good, but the chips tasted stale. Most of us did not like our dinners either. I ordered the birria de short rib and it was a huge disappointment. There was barely any meat in it (maybe like 4 small pieces) and the meat had no flavor at all. Those who got the burgers said it was okay. Another ordered the new york strip, it was a super flat piece of meat (which pretty much means well done) and supposed to come with potato wedges, but he never received them and the server wasn't aware that it did. I think we all liked our cocktails though, so I'll give them that. Our server was friendly, but forgot a few things completely. The ambience was a nice vibe as well, that was the only highlight of the dinner. Overall I would not...
Read moreWent here for my last night, the food was fine, not bad, first they sat us at the wrong table, we had a reservation but there was another reservation for 10 and sat us at their table so they made a random group of people get up and move to put more tables together, the music was also very loud and hard to hear other people talking unless you were right near them, then i got a drink spilled all down my back, and the guy just said opps sorry and then left and then apologized once more later, hair was sticky, clothes were wet and it was cold and finally didn’t realize this til i got home but it soaked my phone so i couldn’t charge it for my plane flight early the next morning, i get mistakes happen but still a nice restaurant like this should have slightly higher standards and more...
