Eat Like A Local is a MUST DO if you want to literally eat where the locals go in Mexico City. Instagram is great for the touristy places that are trendy and hip but this tour feels like you’ve got a cool local friend taking you to their favourite local everyday haunts.
Plaqueta was my group’s tour guide and she was a ball of energy with a wealth of knowledge. She met us at a local cafe with great coffee to start the day right. When we met, I immediately knew that it would be a great tour because her enthusiasm was infectious. I also found out during the tour that she is passionate about Mexican food and has been creating content on places of where to eat and go in Mexico City for years which made her such a reliable expert. Not only does she introduce the food to you, she also backs it up with interesting facts of history.
As a tourist, I would have never been able to find the places that she took us to. They were local food stalls in the hearts of the winding bustling markets or unnoticeable on the sides of the streets and these small businesses have been operating for a very long time rejecting gentrification and carrying on generations of blood, sweat and tears.
I was bursting by the time we got to our last stop so I suggest eating a light dinner the night before and prepare to basically only eat one meal the whole day (you are allowed to have multiple pieces of each food sample at the stalls but there are 12-19 really varied courses of food so PACE YOURSELF). You pay a one time fee and all your expenses during the tour are taken care of so you don’t have to worry bothering about the tiny (and sometimes frustrating) things like tipping with cash. It is also important to note that half of the tour is paid online with a card while the other half requires Mexican pesos that you pass to your guide.
Apart from being a successful tour, I love the ethos of the business. Eat Like A Local is a women led and run business, and they also support children in a program that encourages them to lead a short portion of the tour to practice their English and they get paid for their efforts too (which in my group’s case, will allow little Carlito to pay for summer camp). I thoroughly enjoyed myself, made some new friends with my tour group (a manageable 8 pax) and got to know Mexico City a...
Read moreI realize this tour has amazing reviews but honestly, we didn’t love it. Our guide was good and very personable (the reason for the two stars), but we had expected much better food. Our first stop (after getting really delicious conchas) were pre-prepared street tacos with good flavor but with a cost of 30 pesos, so not quality. The second stop had tacos with pieces of ground bone in it! Yuck. Still looking for quality. We went to several other places for potato-filled tacos, one good taco with pork, but nothing great - no chicken, steak, or fish! All the places were crowded and kinda basic and messy. The flower mart was gorgeous, but the corn we got there was just average - I can make much better street corn in my sleep. It’s definitely nice to see the different places, but the Sabor tour is much better for the same price. You get a tour and historic information about many things in addition to the food. Sabor also includes more alcohol and is 5 hours vs 4. Overall, we’d have expected to go to the “best of the best” of Mexican food but not one thing we had was great. For $250 per couple we could have gone to one of the best Mexican places in Roma Norte or Polanco and ordered all these items and gotten quality. It felt like these vendors were pre-lined up to give Eat Like a Local discounts on low quality food. We see a million great street vendors and have had amazing food at them. The ones we went to on this tour were nowhere near the quality and none of the vendors - not one wore gloves like the nicer places do. Disappointing. And no history of Condesa, Centro, Historic Areas! Love to have that money back for dinner tonight. And the sad thing is we emailed after the tour but several days later, no response from the company. Maybe...
Read moreMy wife & I loved this experience. We did the market tour on our first full day in Mexico City and it was the perfect introduction to the city, it's people and it's food. It was also a good intro to the Metro system as we used it to move around the city during the tour. Because of this we continued using the Metro to get around for the rest of our stay. The Mexico City Metro is amazing! Almost all of the food that we tried was a first for us. Being introduced to so much new food was a dream for me. From street tacos, to fancy fruits, to market sandwiches and soups, to candies and so much more, all of the food was delicious and plentiful! It is no joke when they warn you not to eat breakfast before this tour! I started the tour starving and finished it soo full! The small group size was great and the four of us plus our guide quickly felt like friends touring around the city. Our guide, Rocio, was the best. It is obvious she has a great relationship with all of the food vendors. They were all happy to see us and treated us great. She also did a great job explaining everything and keeping the tour moving at a good pace without ever feeling rushed. Her helper, Arely, was great as well. She took us around to some of the vendors in one of the markets as part of a program to give young people experience speaking English. It is just one of the many ways Eat Like a Local gives back to the community. Arely was lots of fun and her English was very good! Overall, as someone who doesn't enjoy a lot of standard tours, this one was perfect. It was very casual and fun and I still felt like I had learned a lot while still feeling like authentic experience. It was the perfect way to start a visit to CDMX and I highly recommend it...
