After a hectic mid-day shopping spree through Downtown Polanco’s stores, boutiques and Malls, the quaint exterior porch and seating of the rustic porch of Restaurante Matisse Polanco caught our attention. And we were glad it did. Although we just stopped in for a light bite and refreshments, it was excellent. We enjoyed about an hour and a half of leisure time relaxing in their fabulous outdoor setting… comfortably and well attended, and super nice staff. We ordered a deliciously prepared fresh fruit and terrific wine carafe of Sangria, and I ordered Dos Equis Ambar on Draft – it ended up being two. Within a few minutes we decided on ordering Croquetas de Jamon (Ham Croquets) which were fabulous. Had we not had plans already in the mix, we would have stayed for dinner, the menu looked incredible. Before we left, I noticed that the inside of the restaurant was huge. I asked the server if I could walk around and take a look, he said ‘yes by all means. I’m glad I took pictures, it could take me a while to describe, this place was not only huge, but two stories and a gorgeous set up with private, open and patio areas along with an...
Read moreMost of the reviews made a great observation in making sure to distinguish the difference between Matisses bakery (sweet Mexican breads) and their general kitchen.
I’ll start with the bread: With so many great Mexican bakeries in the area, it’s good to add this to the list of reliable delicious fresh baked bread (they make their own cakes too!) It your curious about what to get, I tried their vanilla concha (a must) and their Croissant D’almond (which is one of their best sellers but ultimately is closer to a Mexican bread than a Parisian flaky croissant - not a bad thing by the way, but a must-know difference.
Now their food: Solid list of typical Mexican dishes from the region and seasonal specials. Well, most other people made comments about the food being average. I can confirm this to be the case. Dishes have decent presentation, bland flavors, and not a lot of additional complexity. In other words, don’t be surprised to get average food.
The service is somewhat slow when compared to other restaurants in the area. Prices are typical of Polanco.
Will come back for bread to go but doubt I’ll...
