Wow! I can’t tell you how surprised I was to find a Taiwanese spot in CDMX, much less a pretty good one!
Lu rou fan (arroz lu rou) is my favorite dish and my benchmark for the cuisine. The expression at Sunchill is excellent! The flavors are spot on in terms of savory with a touch of sweet, and the rice is texturally spot on as well.
Most importantly, Sunchill uses diced pork belly for this dish. A lot of Taiwanese spots actually cheap out and use ground pork, so I’m glad to see effort and care put in here. The traditional yellow daikon does get swapped out for pickled cucumber, but I actually really enjoyed it.
I will say the popcorn chicken (palomita de pollo) was just ok. The core flavors are correct with the basil, five spice and white pepper, but it is lacking some savoriness. I think there was also slightly less cornstarch than is typical, but the other photos I've seen look texturally correct 🙂.
Overall, I'm very impressed with Sunchill. I highly recommend the arroz lu rou, and by that virtue I'm sure the gua bai is also good. Thank you for doing my...
Read moreWent with my family and we were very disappointed. We ordered the beef noodles (tastes okay but is too spicy; recommending that the soup be non-spicy with guests provided chili sauce if they want it, which is how things are done in Taiwan). Also ordered the luroufan (braised pork over rice) which was good. The jiaomaji (spicy chicken over rice) isn't taiwanese, nor is the gongbaojiding (kung pao chicken over rice); the names are kind of misleading since in Taiwan these things look and taste completely different. They add cheese and corn to the danbin (egg rolls/cakes) which kind of ruined it for us.
Overall the flavor isn't authentic and the food was too spicy. But the service is great and the waiters are super friendly and helpful. Leaving just 1 star since we're comparing it with food from our hometown. For those who know Taiwanese...
Read moreA cute lil Taiwanese tea shop with boba tea, hot loose leaf and select Taiwanese food options such as gua bao, noodles and popcorn chicken. Their popcorn chicken was fresh and well seasoned - authentic Taiwanese flavor (as I am myself 2nd gen Taiwanese). The boba tea I got was a Mango QQ green tea. Very tasty! Boba was slightly undercooked but not too bad. In addition the vibes of the shop were simple with some Taiwanese decor and Japanese style aesthetic.
Their Taiwanese hot loose leaf tea menu only had Alishan black tea during the time we visited but their other Taiwanese tea options like milk oolong and the other oolong options...
