I was happily surprised to see fresh scallop tostada on the menu. The first thing I asked was whether it has any shrimp in it as I told the waiter of my allergy. After confirming these were sin shrimp, I happily placed my order.
They gave a tiny cup of something on the house. It looked like a a dipping sauce. I dipped my chip in it and noticed it was a big mistake. A costly one.
I asked the waitress what it was, she told me it was a shrimp soup!! I told her I told the waiter I am highly allergic. Even though it was free , it would have been important to know what was brought to the table. Same thing with the two other dipping sauces. One was grey in color, so I had no idea what it was
The waitress then told my waiter and the response I got after I told him again about my allergy, he said āok!ā He clearly didnāt think it was a big deal.
The scallop was fresh and plentiful for a tostada. But sadly it was drenched in heavy lime juice. It was very soar and quite spicy.
While the terrace is nice, I donāt find the price justify the taste nor the service. My tip was 20. Not 20 percent but only 20 pesos. And afterwards, of course I didnāt get a thank you. Go figure.
The worst came after I arrived home. Puffy eyes, rashes all over my body from the allergic reaction. I hope this review remind them the importance of food safety, which includes the attention paid to those with allergy as well as their potential crossed contamination in the kitchen. Imagine if i didnāt ask and finish the whole cup of shrimp soup - I could very likely be in the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOaxaca #4 (Seafood #1): I originally heard about Humar via Instagram. It was later recommended to us by our Airbnb host.
Humar is a rare place that has great food, great service, a great vibe/view, and doesn't overcharge you!
If you only order one thing: aguachile verde (but I'd order everything we ordered below!)
We ordered: Pacifico c oyster x2 $100/ea, camarones zarandeados $225, aguachile verde $225.
Starting off with the Pacificos with oysters on top was a great shout. The oyster was so tasty, and for $100 for that and a beer it felt like a steal.
The camarones zarandeados were legitimately as good if not better than the ones at Mi Compa Chava (in CDMX) and for a fraction of the cost. The marinade/rub was so good, and I really enjoyed dipping in the limey mayo after peeling the shrimp, too.
The aguachile verde was one of the best I've ever had, and aguachile is one of my favorite dishes. The portion, presentation, and flavor were all on point.
Food, sauces, vibes, service were all great :) I would happily come back to re-order all of the above as well as try new things. Highly recommend coming here for food and drinks if you're into seafood...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOver multiple trips to Oaxaca, Iāve eaten in most of the well known restaurants- high and low- but this 2022 trip, Humar- la rambla became my favorite. I normally eat at different places during my visits but this became a mainstay for the delicious, fresh seafood and various unique (for Oaxaca), simple dishes. I tried many dishes and never had a disappointment. Honestly, the Baja style fish taco is the BEST fish taco Iāve had since the first fish taco I had in California 20 years ago. Seriously. Wonderful friendly service, each visit. The house made sauces are ADDICTING! A couple of well chosen artisanal beers that pair well with seafood. Open dining downstairs or on the roof, which can get hot during the heat of the day, but such a nice vibe up there. Iām almost ashamed to admit how many times I ate there during this trip! Shoutout to my girl, Donaji for putting up with my lack of Spanish and always bringing me great choices when I could not choose between dishes...
