Maguey y Maíz — Restaurant in Oaxaca

We were excited to come here for dinner because breakfast was amazing.

Dinner was a huge disappointment.

We ordered guacamole, soup of the day and ceviche.

The tortilla chips are blue corn tortillas and look great aesthetically, but are overcooked and generally too thick so it distracts from the ceviche and and guacamole.

The dishes have a distracting amount of garnish, but underneath all of that it’s flavorful and fresh.

I would recommend this restaurant for breakfast, but not for after 1.

Side note: my 7 year old was asking about what’s in different dishes because this is his first time in Oaxaca and the waiter told him it was made with grasshoppers.

Effing grasshoppers.

My son was freaked out because he’s 7 and he believed the waiter.

The waiter kept doubling down on the grasshopper thing, even when I told him in Spanish to please stop and that he was making my child cry.

Of course because we ordered guacamole and soup and seafood, my youngest thought they had grasshoppers in them and wouldn’t...

Definitely recommend the hummus dish - very unique, nothing like the mediterranean hummus I expected. The tostadas were delicious and the staff explained each dish they brought out - very meticulous, very friendly. And the place is fantastic. There is inside seating, outside seating, and the patio is covered by this beautiful greenery and has a partial cover, delightful. The agua del dia was tamarind - so good. Ask for it without sugar, still really sweet. The tlayuda is unique - the quality of the cheese was something else and the accompaniments were another level of quality. Coffee was incredible. Has two entrances so don’t worried if they take a moment to see you. Very clean, nice courtyard experience typical of Oaxaca, with small bar area off to the side. Service was quick, and very polite 👍 nice finishes on everything including table setting. I ordered the eggs with black beans and chorizo and side of bacon. Came with avocado, cheese, pickled onion and garnish. Very good flavor and decent portion. As a meat lover I’d like more chorizo however the dish was properly balanced. Worth a trip for sure.
