We went here twice during our stay in Oaxaca, and I definitely will say it's a good place to try! The first time one of our friends did get a severe allergic reaction to the food because the staff forgot it was in there... but it's okay she survived! So if you do have an allergic reaction I guess you have to be really insistent in double-double checking it's not in there. Otherwise, the service is super sweet and accommodating. I asked for a cup of hot water once and they were really sweet about it and patient with my tired Spanish. The decorations and atmosphere are really cool--I like the jaguar head in the side room. I ordered the Quesadilla Lacandona (con tortilla de plátano) rellenas de champiñones con epazote the first time, I wasn't a big fan but I know others liked it. I think I got tacos the second time, and they were a little better. Real cool place...
Read more9am and am the only customer. Ordered aqua de Jamaica, was not strong with flavor, almost thought maybe powdered instead of natural . Bread and salsa’s came, salsa’s were good and correctly identified for spice levels, but the bread was disappointing(very) considering what’s available in Oaxaca. Ordered the chilaquiles verde with tasajo. Another disappointment. Tasajo was chewy, about 1/4 of the tortillas were oil soaked, the verde salsa had potential but tasted days old and it definitely separated(bad). Beans were well cooked but needed some flavor(salt). I ate only about 1/3 plate before noticing the broken salsa verde, ugh. Good points- clean place, nice environment, friendly service. Not sure how this place has the rating it does, maybe different chef for dinner, but I’d take a hard pass on going here with so many options for excellent...
Read moreWith traffic in Oaxaca sometimes feeling like the Indianapolis 500 and after walking ourselves into the ground Restaurante Tanipera was a refuge from the storm, a welcome sanctuary for the weary! Set back from the street it is a different world unto itself, welcoming and restoring. The food was great! Perfectly fresh and honest in its preparation. My wife loved her shrimp tacos and I loved both the cheese and the mole! I mean, isn’t it the mole the thing you come to Oaxaca for in the first place? The service was fantastic! We felt welcomed and cared for, ignorant tourists that we were. And the smoothies! I could live off them! This is the kind of place you put on “The List” if you know what I mean. It’s the list the old timers have. The list you share with your friends. Part of the list I’m...
