I’m korean (need to eat kimchi at least once a week to survive or feels like I might die…). This place totally hit the spot! I’ve travel a lot and always seek out Korean food by the end of the week no matter what.
Warning: if the color of you dish contains any liquids/ sauces that are red, 99% of the time it’s spicy for Korean food in general. So keep this in mind when ordering.
Food: five stars!!!
Quality of meat is top notch! And I know my meat. If you are looking for cheap poor quality food, this is not the spot for you.
Dolsot bimbimbap- rice in hot clay pot with meat and Korean style veggies on top with Korean hot pepper paste. Make sure to ask for the paste on the side so you can control the spice level to mix into. Kimchi soft tofu soup regular spicy- added beef instead of pork. This is more of a preference. The soup was solid with all the right veggie tables and good portions of the beef in it! Like pretty big chunks than some of the Korean restaurants I’ve been to. This really hit the spot. Hearty with just the right amount of spicy with a side of rice (order separately). Side dishes: kimchi, pickled onions and radish and pepper, cucumber salad and one other item i can’t remember. These are free. The owners made it a point to be as traditional as possible. This is definitely a plus since the side dishes can get pricey with some of the ingredients needing to be imported from outside of Mexico.
Atmosphere: the power went out but since you can grill meat on a charcoal grill pan on the table, this won’t ever be a problem. Make sure you wear clothing you won’t mind smelling like beef. This is expected at any Korean bbq place you go. Overall a super cute place.
The owners: they are a super cute couple from Los Angeles area and has been exposed to proper Korean food. They even make their own kimchi. I read in one of the reviews below the kimchi wasn’t real. It is. It just tastes different as it ages. I was born in Korea and every korean family has their own kimchi recipe and it’s not easy to make. I see online videos for some generic kind and those are legitimately terrible. But the ones made here are with care and understand as kimchi ages how it should be used to cook.
Thank you for making me feel like a human again. It was definitely satisfying and ate...
Read moreI was sick of Mexican food after a couple of days in Oaxaca and decided to try this restaurant. Being from Los Angeles and my girlfriend being Korean, we were hesitant at first as we are used to some of the best Korean food, but Talaseu delivered. I actually live 1 block away from k-town in NYC and the dolsot bibimbap we had at Talaseu was probably better than any I’ve had back in NYC and maybe even LA. But my favorite dish was actually the seafood soon du bu which featured a clearer type of broth that had a great depth of ocean flavor as they loaded it with tons of calamari, peeled shrimp, and clams- my girlfriend found it comparable to the home cooked style found in Korean households. As for the bbq, we had the pork belly and LA galbi which were both excellent. Their grills utilize real lump wood charcoal which is hard to find these days, but adds a smoky flavor that takes the bbq to another level. As an added bonus, the service was top notch and our server, Armando, spoke English. As for weaknesses, I found the egg soufflé too sweet, but that may just be my preference. Also, some of the banchan had a sort of soapy aftertaste that I could not quite identify, but it may be a different type of vinegar or sugar that I am not exposed to back in the states. Overall the food was a 5/5. I could eat the seafood soon du bu and dolsot bibimbap every single day. If your tastebuds need a break from all the corn and flour based meals, don’t hesitate to give this...
Read moreNot sure how they managed to receive those high reviews before. Seems suspicious.
Based on my experience: the food is an average pretense of Korean cuisine - yes the ingredients were good quality and fresh but tasteless and unimaginative. We had to ask for soy sauce and chili sauce to try to conjure some life into that bowl. I’ve had better kimchi from a grocery store package that what was served there. It would be sad if that was someone’s first experience of Korean food.
The bowl itself arrived in 45ish minutes, the waiter kept coming back asking if that ingredient is okay and could this or that ingredient be used. The order for the food was taken three times and there BBQ was suggested multiple times even though we did not want that. The waiters were lovely however some were a bit clueless.
The worst is that this was my second time at the restaurant. The first time we were six people and I thought maybe they were overwhelmed with our amount. The restaurant is super small. The previous time we ended up canceling the order after half an hour of the same back’n’forth from the waiters trying to convince us to take the bbq not bowls.
If you are there for the BBQ, you might enjoy it - though I saw a lot of agonized faces when the meat sizzled and sparked here and there. And the smoke filled the entire restaurant. Our hair and clothes smelled intensely like BBQ even though we ordered bowls, so jus be...
