Have been passing by this restaurant for a few years, but, never got to it. I was impressed by the decor, its small quaint size, lighting and its impeccably clean look. Last night, around 830pm decided to go, as I knew I could dine light with a few appetizers. Was surprised to arrive around 9pm, that all tables (the place is small) inside were taken, having thought about being inside, only because of heat and possibly mosquitos. But, we were warmly welcomed by Eliane, whose warm demeanor, made us change our mind. She quickly set up a 3 top, but, let us know beforehand that she was the only server, and that it may take some time. Her delivery was such, she easily persuaded us. My friends (women) wore shorts and one did feel mosquitos. However, there was a pleasant breeze so it was not hot but perfect. With vegetarian friends who also were unfamiliar with the cuisine, her depth of knowledge of the menu was most welcome, as she answered all their questions. Everthing arrived in a timely manner and was as good as I expected. My friends loved tasting flavors that they were not familiar with, and were elated by their choices. Furthermore, Eliane, who was serving all tables, never failed to check on us, always bringing dishes and drinks promptly and with a efervescent approach, never rushed. We spoke in Spanish, but I believe she is fluent in Portuguese and English. Met a couple who were there for their 1st time too, who loved their dinner selections also. This will now become a restaurant in my regular rotation in particular if Eliane is there, as the coupling of the food and her service are...
Read moreUpdated review (Same day)* After interacting with one of the servers to pay the bill, we were hit with a default tip amount, although I could read the card reader had an option to specify the exact amount of tip we wanted to leave, the server made it really awkward telling us about how much % is required for the kitchen to operate (we were only 34 pesos off 🙃)
I understand they’re probably trying to make $$ off of tourists but gratuities are earned not demanded.
————- Original Review;
Tried out Kobma while in Playa del Carmen and overall had a good experience with the food. We started with the spring rolls and a shrimp appetizer—both were fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared. For the main course, we went with the Chinese fried rice and Mongolian beef, and both dishes delivered on taste. Both had a nice depth of flavor, while the fried rice was a solid complement.
One downside was the drinks. We ordered the passion fruit lemonade and the ginger mint lemonade, but unfortunately both were watered down and lacked the flavor punch we were expecting.
Service was friendly and the ambiance was relaxed, making it a good spot for a casual evening out. If they improve the drinks, this place could easily be a standout. Would still recommend for the food alone (if you...
Read moreI have lived in playa for almost 5 months, I am celiac (gluten free not by choice). I am just recently starting to dine out. I pass by this adorable restaurant every single day and I smile and nod to the server out front. Well today was the day!! I explained my diet restrictions and the server Elaine could not have been more accommodating and helpful! The Chef's altered one of the sauces so I could have the sashimi and then I ordered a roll with a side of rice. Not all rice is created equal haha some have traces of gluten (so sad but true), so Elaine walked in kitchen got me the bag of rice and brought it out to show me it is pure rice free from gluten. If I'm being honest the fish was so fresh the whole experience was so lovely I had a moment of gratitude that got me a little choked up. A feeling many of us celiac's encounter as dining out is usually stressful and there is always a chance for us to get "sick". All in all 10/10 and I come from Vegas with some of the freshest foods and finest fish. Impressed with the service, quality, and experience. I will be back. ...
