Konamon — Restaurant in Playa del Carmen

When I heard there was a new Japanese restaurant, I was definitely skeptical at first. Let me tell you how quickly I was proven wrong.

From the first bite of the yakisoba and the first sip of the miso soup(one of the best I've ever had in my life) this meal was absolutely phenomenal.

We tried more than half the menu and I was blown away by each item. The flavors were fantastic, the quality was top notch and the atmosphere made it the perfect dinner out.

You can tell there is love in this food. This easily fits into my top 5 restaurants in Playa.

As an additional note of how amazing they are, unfortunately I'm allergic to octopus but they were able to use the ebi mayo from the onigiri as the filling instead so I could still order them(and I'm grateful because YUM)

This was my first visit, but it definitely will not be my last.

Edit [Aug 9th, 2024]: I've since been many many times and each time it has been consistently just as phenomenal as the time before. The food is always phenomenal and seasoned perfectly. This has become a go-to spot for my friends and I.

Edit [August 27th, 2025]: Konamon has expanded their menu to even more delicious plates and bites and they continue to be absolutely phenomenal. We have been tons of times now and never once have we been disappointed. Their consistency is impressive and the quality is always top notch. I just tried the Magura Wakame for the first time. The tuna was so tender, and the sauce complimented the seaweed perfectly. I ate it slowly because I didn't want it...

This place is a hidden gem! We have now gone twice, once for lunch and once dinner. The food is absolutely incredible; the okonomiyaki has to be tried for a fantastic experience and the takoyaki is an incredible appetizer to share.

The fried chicken was a huge surprise as you don’t expect to be blown away by fried chicken, yet it has to be tried (my kids gobbled it up and my son doesn’t even like chicken!). The onigiris are delicious, all 3 desserts have to be tasted (pastel de matcha was our favorite), and the non alcoholic drinks have to be had, you won’t miss the alcohol and they will bring you off the beaten track with something original and satisfying.

Service is outstanding and warm, and the owner’s adorable baby was pure joy to see. Oh and the prices are totally affordable, you will not break the bank for this meal. In fact it’s just about the best value you can get when most restaurants in the area are grossly overpriced.

Do yourself a favor and maie this a must stop while in Playa, it will be the best culinary experience you’ll have on your trip! (I live here and I get to go again and again!)
