THIS IS NOT the Funky Geisha it used to be. Here’s why:
This is a new location on the other side of the street and down the strip It smelled like swamp all of dinner At the old location about a year and a half ago, the service was top notch. Here, it was average at best. No more sandy beach floor. It lacks that same charm. I get that loud music is a vibe here, but beware of this place if you want to have a dinner where you’re not yelling into everyone’s ear: I am genuinely baffled by the music choice. They’re blasting “from the window to the walls till the sweat drips down my balls” while I’m trying to enjoy some spicy tuna. It’s not even a remixed version either. Straight up from your middle school dance. It’s super tacky. This is not what I’d expect from Tulum. I could have honestly been okay with the rest of the problems, but this one is just impossible to ignore. This really feels like Rosa Negra decided to increase their profits by cutting their costs because they know they’ll get bookings anyway based on the reputation of what the place used to be. The small details are lacking… I couldn’t read the paper menu because all the ink bled through due to it being wet. Yeah, whatever, they have a QR code, fine. But it makes you wonder… if they’re neglecting something as essential as their own menu, where else are they cutting corners? The prices are high for what you get. I had a dinner at Ilium the night before and it was just miles better. Day and night honestly. I honestly couldn’t wait for the dinner to be over.
The only reason I give it 2 stars and not 1 is that most dishes are still quite good, and I have to be fair. Unless you want sushi - in which case your options are limited to like 4 basic rolls which are super underwhelming if you know anything about sushi. Look at their online menu and see for yourself.
Do better, Rosa Negra! C’mon. What’s...
Read moreMy first night in Tulum a friend suggested we go to dinner and as a vegetarian we walked away from 4 restaurants before finding Funky Geisha. Though excessively and unnecessarily loud, I agreed as I was hungry and they had veggie options. We were seated at a tiny table against the wall that shouldn’t even exist for anyone that’s consuming more than drinks. The table barely had enough space for both our plates nevermind our drinks. The lighting design is horrible with the bowls higher than the candles and no light from above. I couldn’t even see my food. We requested to move to an actual table and upon doing so I was able to see that my meal which was $18 US consisted of 1 bite of rice noodles, maybe 4 tiny carrots and a few peppers. The worst part of this whole dining “experience” was when the waiter spilled an entire drink onto my lap yet our bill was never adjusted to reflect the fact that he ruined my pants, I had to sit in sopping wet pants and walk around after that. I asked to speak with the manager and was told there was nothing they could do as it was in the computer already. What? The waiter said he would pay for it, by just not tipping him. What? He’s assuming he deserved and we were going to tip him $18 which is what the drink cost. My friend urged me to just let it go but everyone should know what kind of establishment they’re patronizing by eating here. I did absolutely nothing but try to go to dinner with a friend, received a drink in my lap ruining my clothing and was told I still had to pay. My only mistake was not walking out of the place without paying. Nothing was good about the experience here. Food lackluster and way over priced and no concern for the patrons or their clothing or experience. In contrast Tamarindo, another restaurant was amazing with real...
Read moreI celebrated my birthday weekend in Tulum and decided on a low-key yet memorable dinner at Funky Geisha — and it did not disappoint! As a lover of both Thai and Japanese cuisine, I was excited to try this spot. We initially chose it because it looked more relaxed compared to the neighboring restaurants, but Funky Geisha surprised us with an incredible atmosphere and unexpected entertainment, including beautiful dancers and a captivating fire show.
From the moment we walked in, the customer service was fantastic. We were seated on a stage next to the DJ, which gave us a prime view of the show and really set the vibe for the night. Now… let’s talk about the food — WOW. Everything we tried was absolutely delicious, and I mean everything. Even the vegan options were impressive!
We started with spring rolls, shishito peppers, and edamame — all fresh and flavorful. For drinks, we had the Bhakti, which came with a special presentation, the Java, and the Funky — all of which were not only delicious but also visually stunning. The Drunken Noodles were a bit oily, but that didn’t stop us from devouring them alongside the perfectly cooked Mixed Yakimeshi (their version of fried rice). We also ordered seafood, including a white fish that was so good we didn’t even have time to take a picture before it was gone!
To top it off, we ended the night with the Maxapán Carajillo — a superb finish to an incredible meal. The combination of great food, top-tier service, and lively entertainment made this a birthday dinner to remember. I can’t wait to come back with more friends and family to experience it...
