Went here for breakfast with my friend visiting me from London. Unfortunately the sandwich she ordered arrived missing the main ingredient that cost extra. She realised this after 2 bites. This should have been a minor incident where a simple mistake was made and solved. Unfortunately this unfolded into one unprofessional and very disappointing experience...
We called the waitress over immediately, who didnât really acknowledge the issue as she was distracted by her colleague. She then proceeded to serve other customers when it wasnât even busy. I used to work in retail so I can understand mistakes happen but this was just poor. The sandwich remained with us and we had no idea whether something was being done about it or not. Meanwhile it was continuing to get cold.
About 15 minutes later, I had finished my meal. My friend still has the now cold sandwich. The waitress brings over one single slither of ham (the main ingredient missing.) By this point we decided we should just have the sandwich refunded as we had places to be and didnât want to wait for a replacement. The waitress seemed to understand why we wanted it taken off the bill.
The manager however stormed over very aggressively. It seemed he had decided that he wasnât going to allow for two, female, young adults, one being a woman of colour, to have something removed off the bill. He was on a mission.
He dropped a âSorryâ card on the table which was a coffee token. He presented this as if this was a crown jewel and we should be honoured to receive such a thing. My friend was super polite and said thank you but no thank you. He proceeded to say that taking things off the bill is not their âpolicyâ. He also said my friend had eaten the sandwich mind blown. As mentioned my friend had 2 bites, enough in order to realise the sandwich was incorrect. We then explained that this was definitely not our fault as he was insinuating it was. Since when had ordering something and receiving the wrong product ever the consumers fault? If I ordered a blue top online should I just accept a pink one?
Throughout this confrontation I recognised that had I, a white woman, raised this issue or had my friend been a white man, the manager wouldnât have spoken with the unacceptable tone and aggression he did. He was looking to confirm his pre-existing racial biases by intimidating and trying to cause an argument with my friend. Fortunately my friend is very polite and not a confrontational person so didnât rise to his level. He was very much creating a scene.
My friend then had to say this is not the managerâs fault but it also wasnât her fault so we shouldnât have to pay for this mistake. He then stormed away and took the item off the bill. They also charged us for a croissant we ordered that never arrived. After highlighting this error, he then stormed off again, came back and proceeded to say âFor the last time, you ordered...â.
They also CHARGED US for TAP WATER?!?!?
We paid so we could get out of the situation as quickly as possible as it was very unpleasant. After, he said in a very aggressive and sarcastic way, âok byeâ and proceeded to march off again , taking with him the apology token.
I work in consumer services and I can honestly say this was the worst service I have witnessed. The manager did not say sorry for the inconvenience or even thank you for visiting. It was very evident he did not want us there. He just tried to intimidate us into paying for a dish that was incorrect.
If you learn anything from my experience, donât bother going here as if THEY mess up your order, some how it will be YOUR fault. Donât give your money to a place with such backwards attitudes. Please any person of colour reading this, do not give this business your money. The food isnât special enough to justify sitting through a...
Read moreI give two stars because on one hand the bread is delicious and the service fast however I felt a bit ripped off. I ordered the breakfast with the homemade vegan bacon. I am not a vegan but I am interested in exploring vegan options. I examined the oeuf en cocotte and could not find the vegan bacon and so I enquired with the staff. I was told it was the coconut flakes. I could not believe it. Their version of vegan bacon was paprika sprinkled on a small sprinkling of coconut flakes. And this offered at the same price as the real bacon or Scottish smoked salmon alternative. Clearly coconut flakes are substantially cheaper than meat and fish so why pay the same price? Vegan is better for the planet and cheaper in production so why pay the same price as meat or fish alternatives? I feel like the menu advertises vegan options in order to increase their revenue and not for the vegan ethos. I'm also disappointed by the dishonesty in other menu options where my partner ordered shakshuka which supposed to be served with halloumi, a key differentiating ingredient, and he was served without the cheese and not informed by the staff that the restaurant had run out of cheese. I mean who does that ! I have worked in the service industry for a good seven years and we would always honestly inform our clients of any missing ingredients and offer an alternative or discount. We would certainly never dishonesty hide the truth and charge the...
Read moreI am loathe to give a negative review in these times but I was extremely disappointed. Me and my partner used to go to Anne and Max in Leiden, it was great. Here, they have updated their menu and it is a real downgrade. Menu aside, we ordered 'a good start'. A misnomer if ever there was one. Over cooked rubbery eggs, no cheese despite the description, served almost stone cold. The bread was very forgettable, the avocado spread flavourless and the presentation on wood platter and bowl is impractical. It may have been a bad day for the chef. More concerning was the attempts to fix the issue by the staff involved putting it back under the grill to cook further. How would this fix over cooked eggs? Their 2nd suggestion was to put it into a different plate. They were polite and apologetic right up until the moment they presented the full bill, with all items included. I would have been embarrassed to present this to a customer. A resounding disappointment. In their defence they did strike one of the items off the bill, at my insistence. It's a shame because some of the reviews suggest people enjoy this place. I cannot for the life of me see why. Anne and Max: rethink your menu, or go back to the old one. Until then, there are so many better options...
