Cafe Bern in Amsterdam falls short of expectations, earning a one-star rating. The restaurant's atmosphere is unremarkable, blending in with many other casual eateries in the city without offering anything distinctive.
The sole bright spot of the experience was the bartenders. They stood out for their helpfulness and kindness, demonstrating a level of customer service that was notably above average. Their friendly demeanor and attentiveness at the bar area provided a glimpse of what the overall experience could have been.
Unfortunately, this positive element was significantly overshadowed by an older male waiter whose behavior was decidedly problematic. His rudeness and complete lack of service were glaring issues. It was unclear what his actual role in the restaurant was, as he appeared to contribute nothing positive to the experience. This level of poor service is difficult to overlook and dramatically impacted the overall impression of the establishment.
The outdoor seating area further adds to the disappointment. It's unlit and insignificant, offering a subpar experience. Moreover, table service is not available outside; patrons must order drinks from the bar and carry them to their outdoor seats themselves. This setup feels neglectful and fails to create an inviting outdoor atmosphere.
The stark contrast between the helpful bartenders and the negligent waiter points to serious inconsistencies in Cafe Bern's service standards. This disparity, combined with the poorly managed outdoor area, creates a confusing experience for diners.
In conclusion, Cafe Bern is a disappointing option in Amsterdam's dining scene. While the bartenders do their best to salvage the experience, the rude and ineffective service from the older waiter, combined with unmemorable food and a neglected outdoor area, makes it hard to recommend.
There are likely numerous better options available in Amsterdam for a pleasant dining experience. Unless significant improvements are made, particularly in service consistency and outdoor amenities, Cafe Bern is probably...
Read moreI was so excited to try this place based on reviews. For two days, I tried to visit th le location and both days they were closed even though Yelp listed them as open. Nonetheless, on the third day we happened to be nearby, and it was open! Yay! The menu is tiny! But since we were there for the cheese and the meat, I didn't mind. That is until the cheese and meat arrived. The steak was extremely bland with not even salt, and the cheese had the oddest sour flavor. I tried to eat it several times until I asked my friend if this was indeed the flavor of fondue, as this was my first time having this kind of meal. An avid fondue lover, she said it wasnt the worst cheese she'd ever had but it definitely was no where near the best. I tried to order something else, because I disliked the flavor that much even though I'm a crazy cheese lover, but as a sad looking plate of spaghetti walked by, I changed my mind and decided to grab something somewhere else. This place was...
Read moreI visited with my friends a little while ago and we ordered the fondue (I'm Swiss btw). We had been here before but this time they undercooked the fondue so the alcohol was still extremely pungent. We asked the waiter if they could dilute the fondue or cook it more, because some of us were sensitive to alcohol/sober and it was hitting us. The waiter got very defensive and condescending and said "I don't know what to tell you. This is how Swiss fondue is supposed to be. I can't help you". I didn't bring up the fact that it's literally the food of my country, because I don't like getting into silly arguments with people who get defensive instead of offering solutions. This is specifically about that one man who waited on us. That being said, the soup was amazing. I would recommend going somewhere else for fondue, especially if you don't want to get drunk...
