“Don’t read them the menu!”
We all know the Amsterdam story of being caught in heavy rain and in the search for a nice venue to wait out the worst.
We approached the restaurant in such a situation, where we kindly asked if there was a table available.
The younger waitress by the door kindly went away to check and came quickly back emphasizing that as the time was approaching 6 pm they do not have any tables for drinks only dinner. We said that wasn’t a problem but asked to see the menu (to ensure that it was vegetarian friendly for some in our group of 3).
She then started explaining the different items on the menu and the style of menu as she got interrupted by an older waitress (perhaps the manager for the evening?) that approached her and told her in Dutch (not to us) that she shouldn’t tell us the menu because there are no tables. This was surprising as the entire outdoor area under their roof had multiple seats available and the restaurant itself was only one-third full.
The older waitress then turned to us and said that the venue was full and that explained that the younger waitress only explained the menu to us because she thought we lived close by so we could come here another day or next week (the younger waitress looked very surprised to the way she was just interrupted and the entire dialog). We were as you might imagine also surprised how a fairly friendly encounter with the younger waitress turned very heated and condescending so drastically when the older waitress entered the conversation and we informed them that we do in fact live just around the corner (which is true).
She insisted once again that they did not have any tables available so we therefore left.
They lingered on us as we were walking away to our swapfiets and unlocked them. At this moment is where what we can only assume was they realized we were infact locals? So they chased after us and said that they had a cancelation of 10 people and if we wanna eat we are now welcome to do so.
We responded by saying that the way we were just treated we would rather go to a different restaurant.
In the end, we went to have dinner at another restaurant. They did not have any issue with the way we looked nor our ethnicity. In fact, they were very happy to arrange a table for us so we didn’t have to be in the pouring rain.
This encounter took place on the 10th of July 2021, I hope this restaurant has changed by the time...
Read moreI went here once before and it was fine, second time not so. While I was there I felt uncomfortable for the following reasons:
The waiter that seated our table was quite rude. When we came in we asked for a table for two and we were told that we could sit at the bar. We asked if we could maybe sit at a table but the waiter told us that it's very normal to sit at the bar in this restaurant. We asked again kindly and he said he would look (mind you the restaurant was almost empty otherwise I would have understood). He didn't look and told us to just sit there. We didn't complain and sat at the bar (I had to move two boxes to sit somewhat comfortable). We weren't off on a great start. Funny thing is that later on two other couples had the same request but they were able to sit at a table.
Later we ordered some drinks and food. The food was good and tasty so no complaints about that. But because we were sitting at the bar we could hear all the staffs conversation and discussions, which wasn't very pleasant.
Later when we finished eating the owner came to our table and told us that they weren't sure If we finished eating because we didn't follow restaurant etiquette and put our forks next to the plate. This was very belittling because the plates were clearly empty, no food left. I wonder if she would have made that remark if I wasn't 18.
I would not go there again! You go to a restaurant not only for the food but also for a...
Read moreI recently dined at Frizzanteria in Amsterdam, and it was truly an exceptional experience. From the moment I walked in, I felt warmly welcomed. The service was impeccable, with the staff going above and beyond to ensure our dining experience was memorable. The highlight of the evening was, without a doubt, the outstanding Italian cuisine. The quality of the food was outstanding, and every dish was fantastic with authentic Italian flavours.
But what truly sets Frizzanteria apart is not just the delicious food but also their remarkable selection of sparkling and semi-sparkling wines. Their wine list offers a diverse and interesting range of options that perfectly complement the Italian dishes.
What makes Frizzanteria exceptional is not only the great food and wine but also the genuine hospitality. The staff's friendliness and attentiveness, combined with the intriguing wine selection, created an unique dining experience.
If you're in Amsterdam and looking for great Italian cuisine paired with great wine list, I recommend...
