NESS Amsterdam — Restaurant in Amsterdam

I booked a birthday dinner here. I asked all info in advance and attended with a party of 12. The dinner was nice with good food and cocktails. Some servers and staff were very professional and friendly like Donatello was very nice who seated us and another server who brought extra sashimi because it seemed like they didn't have 2 of the 4 options we ordered. However some things were a bit strange. I requested a birthday dessert via email as the option they offered and also my friend asked a waiter as a reminder. But after waiting for some time nothing came and then a waiter told us that they need the table for other guests. We told him we are waiting for the birthday dessert but he said it was too late and that he was sorry about that but we need to leave. I didn't really understand this kind of service. It was really disappointing that my friends could not sing me happy birthday or why we needed to be suddenly kicked out. I even explained to him that I discussed it by email but he didn't seem to care. It was also strange not to get the bill at the table so we had to wait in a line to pay in the busy entrance of people waiting to get seated. The lady who we paid asked us how our dinner was and I told her what happened. She was very sorry about our experience and offered for us to go back to the table but the mood was kind of ruined. Then she arranged for us to have some free shots which was very kind of her but you know the whole point was the birthday celebration so it is what it is. They also collected our jackets without a ticket in the beggining so after we paid we also stood there like 20 min waiting to get the jackets back. Anyway some elements were super nice but I didn't leave with a good feeling for my birthday celebration. So to be honest I don't think I'd celebrate it...

Great place in a pretty odd location. The owners seem to want to make a palace of decadence in the suburbs of Amsterdam and I am not sure if that works, but the food was excellent! Their mixologist did an amazing job and even rustled up a special cocktail for the lady in our party who didn't fancy any of the menu items. Food was really well presented, with a very inventive menu that does not just span sushi but also other dishes like spicy king crab, grilled lobster, oysters, beef tataki, dynamite shrimps etc. We had one fabulous dish after another served on us and there was so much to try. Desserts were also excellent (we tried all four!). Service was a bit hit and miss - and they did not come round to tell us their kitchen was closing. They seemed a bit disorganised and new to it all. Music was too loud to keep a conversation. We sat in a booth and you could hear your neighbour but not the person across from you in the booth. Music was good though and we got such good vibes from this place. At EUR 250/head including a tip definitely on the pricey side. We did have lots of drinks and expensive menu items, but still... Would recommend for groups of friends going for a fun night out. Definitely not good for a romantic...
