We visited a restaurant called "Vlees & Co" (which basically means "Meat & Company" in English) in Amsterdam Noord. I'd noticed it about a year ago in one of the newer neighborhoods up there, and even from the outside it had struck me as a really lovely, well-decorated spot with a gorgeous terrace right on the water. It's a steakhouse, so yesterday we finally decided to go with some friends.
Normally you can't reserve a table on the terrace, which had me a bit worried because it was a really warm day and we were hoping to sit outside by the water. But luckily, when we arrived, we got a spot on the terrace right away for our group of seven. The terrace is absolutely wonderful, and the interior is beautifully decorated as well. Great choice of materials, very charming. But that terrace on the water really steals the show.
We ordered a Chateaubriand, some Sirloin F1 Wagyu AUS, and a bavette, plus a couple of kids' meals with chicken nuggets. We also had a nice bottle of red wine. The meat was top-notch, really excellent quality. As for sauces, we tried their chimichurri and something they call the "Butter of the Gods," which is basically bone marrow served right in the bone so you can spread it like butter, delicious.
Everything was served with fries on the side, and the meat came on little grills to keep it warm while you share. The bavette was small. It should have weigh about 200 grams, to me it looked a bit on the small side if you're really hungry, but the person who had it didn't complain. We split the Chateaubriand and Wagyu between three adults and a child, and that also looked not too much to eat for hungry people, but in the end we filled up with fries, fried mushrooms, and some desserts.
Speaking of desserts, we had the Vlees&Co x Patrick Wu signature desset: a brownie with chocolate, caramel banana tamarind, and bacon (amazing!), a cheesecake, and the yuzu passion fruit cake that was super fresh and tangy. All in all, the food was delicious, the place was beautiful, and the service was good, not five-star luxury service, but definitely nothing to complain about. I'll probably be back next time I’m in the mood for some...
Read moreI expected more, especially from the steaks. The quality of the meat was good, but the preparation lacking. They serve the streaks on a small grill presumably to keep them warm, if not for the novelty.
That's fine, but those things get hot, so the steaks should be removed pretty much immediately, which we did, or they will overcook. After that the grill is just in the way.
Removing my Dry Aged rib eye from the grill as fast as possible however did not save it from overcooking. It was medium, at best. Some parts were well-done.
The server did offer to have me made a new steak, but I didn't like the idea of them throwing a whole steak in the trash so I declined. The steak was still good food, I'm not so posh I'm going to demand you throw away a 34 euro steak. Anyway that was still a bit disappointing especially for the price, hence 3 stars.
Probably won't...
Read moreExcellent food! Really great steaks for meat lovers. However, the service is very slow and somehow strange. I had doubts about the meat in my appetizer which I thought was pork. I can’t eat pork of course. I finished the salad and cheese and left all the meat aside. I was hoping someone will ask me, as I tried to call any waiter. After around 15 minutes, a waiter finally asked me if there is something wrong. He then told me it’s beef and not meat, so I ate the whole thing. Now, I even waited for someone. He came back asking me if I was done. Yes, I was, and I asked why is my food so late? He said, we always wait for our guest to finish their starters and then serve them their main dish! I am not complaining, but this is one of the strangest things that I have encountered. Bottomline, try to speed up your service! Otherwise, this is one of the best steak...
