De Dikke van Dale — Restaurant in Leeuwarden

The location and atmosphere are very nice. So if you just want to go for a drink this is a great place.

But for diner.. I would not recommend. I was eating here with five friends. My two vegetarian friends did not have a lot of options, only two hot dishes. So they both decided to take a (meal) salad. You couldn't really call this a meal, it was just a larger portion of the side salad..

I also had dessert for two, according to the menu just €10, but this was per person and was a mistake in our menu - and the waitress forgot to tell us when we ordered. Not a pleasant suprise when you're already at the check-out. Also the special of the day was in the menu €13,95. But at the counter I had to pay €16,95.

When I said something about it they only had excuses, same goes for when we said the salad was scanty. They only offered extra dressing.. But that was not really the problem.

Even though my meal was quite okay, it wasn't worth the €16,95 for me. Or maybe just the whole...

Nice service. Dutch restaurant. One amazing experience I will mention at the very start - we ordered 3-4 dishes for two people and the waitress mentioned that this might be too fool for you two. So we took her suggestion and order less food, and it was sufficient. I just love such restaurants who also care for food and people's money apart from their profit. We ordered nachos which was good quantity and was nice. Ambiance is amazing. This place is one artistic place maintained with care. They write their boards with hand. Very thoughtful interior. I will visit...

Interieur van De Dikke Van Dale zeer stijlvol, klassiek, apart en gezellig. Ik zat zelf op terras want goed weer. Bediening vriendelijk. Moest wat lang wachten op de bierkaart. Deze en ook de kleine menukaart bezaaid met plakvlekken door drank-morsing door vorige klanten of bedrijfsvoering. Keuze uit bieren is overigens geweldig! Wel beetje toevallig dat ik twee keer iets probeerde uit te kiezen dat er niet meer was, maar wie weet was het inderdaad toeval, zou kunnen. Nog altijd keus genoeg.

Ik bestelde fish & chips. De chips waren aardappelschijfjes i.p.v. frieten. Niet zo erg, maar minder vullend dan normale frieten! De speciale saus erbij was heerlijk. Ik miste wel een beetje (rauwe) groenten erbij. Dat mag best voor die ± € 19.

Een grote FLOP was de vis. Het spijt me echt, maar het is eerlijk waar. Smaakte nergens naar, was ondanks het frituren 'waterig', slap, luchtig en met totaal geen bite. Een enigszins typische vissmaak ontbrak finaal. Het was eerder een heel saaie prut met een korstje. Andere maaltijden zullen wellicht goed zijn, maar die "vis" van de fish & chips sloeg nergens op. Heel jammer, want ik lees eerder over andere maaltijden goede reviews. Twee personeelsleden erkenden de fout of namen mijn klacht gelukkig serieus.

Maar je krijgt dan in die min of meer zeldzame gevallen in krenterig Nederland zeer zelden korting of een soort goedmaking door een gratis drankje, kop koffie o.i.d. Het is dan in de regel: Dat spijt me, ik zal het doorgeven aan de keuken." Zo ook hier. Ik wil best nog eens terugkomen, al of niet met een of meer vrienden. Maar fish & chips zal ik daar dan zeker niet...
