Went here for brunch with my partner due to the high rating (4.7 at the time), but we were disappointed. Here is why:
Sign outside said wait here to be seated, but after a couple of minutes standing there with no assistance, we decided to go inside. Although it wasn't that busy (less than 50% of tables we taken), the personnel seemed pretty distracted/chaotic and didn't notice me - even though I was trying to get their attention. We decided to just go sit at a table outside and help ourselves to the menu.
Luckily, it didn't take too long for someone to take our order. I wanted to order Loaded Croissants, which has poached eggs. The waitress said they didn't have croissants anymore, but they could make it with bread. I'm not a big fan of bread, but most brunch dishes had bread anyway, so I decided to accept. The wait time was normal. When I got my food, it turned out the poached eggs were cooked way too long - to the point of dry yellow-grey on the inside - and what I would consider hard boiled eggs. This, combined with the bread as a replacement, made the dish rather dry. Aside from these issues, the seasoning was just not there, it tasted rather bland (to note, we barely use salt at home ourselves for health reasons). My partner ordered some pancakes and she also thought these were bland and unremarkable.
At the end, when the waitress came to clean up the table, she asked if the food was okay. I explained that I didn't find it tasteful because of the hard cooked eggs - which I left on my plate. She noticed and responded "Ahh yes, I see what you mean. A well, it can happen.". I found that a strange response. Yes, it can happen, but it really shouldn't when I pay close to 20 euro's for some eggs. I professional cook should be able to make poached eggs as they are intended (runny).
These were the reasons behind why I gave a low rating for food and service. The atmosphere was fine but unremarkable. It's a pretty decent place to sit outside. No complaints on that front.
Needless to say, I'm not going back to this place and thus I can't...
Read moreI have eaten in this place several times since it opened a couple of years ago. I have been there for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. And, I will probably go again. However, I cannot rate it over 3 stars. Here is why. On the positive side, the place is very nice and comfortable, the staff is super friendly, and the owner is fantastic. You really feel you are in a home environment. They have a nice menu with a good variety of options. They also have gluten-free beers, which is very cool. Coffee is great, and pastries and cakes are delicious. On the other hand, they are not consistent with the quality and quantity of the food. You will go one day, and the food is delicious and enough, then at another time it is dry, or the amount is reduced. Oftentimes, they lack a key ingredient of a plate and will change it for another one, which will change the amount of food and even its quality. Considering gluten-free food is already more expensive than gluten-based products, maintaining a consistency between quality and quantity is key. For example, if you pay for a tiny burger more than what people will pay for a regular burger, at least it needs to be delicious every time you order it. I recommend this place as it is the only gluten-free restaurant in Leiden. But, I would really recommend the managers of this nice place to be more aware of the consistency in the quality (and quantity) of...
Read moreWe have been at this restaurant a few times and enjoyed their food each time we are there. The service quality was also always high. However, the service employees' knowledge about the difference between dairy-free and lactose-free seems to be lacking. Luckily, we understood their confusion after asking several questions and requiring further explanation from the kitchen. If you are allergic or intolerant to dairy food (because of casein) like we are, please question the food carefully. Fortunately, the waitress was so helpful and kind that she discussed the issue with the kitchen twice.
An update: We went there again today and the chef was absolutely helpful. He explained all ingredients in detail. He even showed the boxes of the dessert they order from outside to check the ingredients together. So, if you are in doubt about anything, please consult the chef. He is so open to guide...
