Rembrandt Roast — Restaurant in Leiden

I always thought this was only a tiny takeaway — I only had noticed it for ordering at home during covid times. I truly think they have the best spare ribs take away in town. I was surprised to know that it’s actually a restaurant. I was very happy to experience it on a beautiful Friday early summer evening. The room facing Noordeinde has a wonderful light. The service was lovely and very attentive. Instead of the usual spear ribs, I tried the chicken spies, which I loved. The martini was superb. Totally recommend. I’m surprised it was so quiet and only a few people dining in, maybe because of the location, but definitely worth it and I totally recommend it! Surely...

I am usually very hesitant in ordering anything at a grill restaurant as it usually disappoints. This time I had a voucher so decided to give it a try.

It was amazing! I ordered the 'mixed grill spies'. Which has different types of meat and was surprised by the taste and preparation. Since all the different meats require different preparation times I expected at least some of them to be overcooked, but they were all perfect! Beef, pork and chicken all juicy and tasty. The fries were also very tasty, crispy and well seasoned.

I was the first in the restaurant only minutes after it opened, but got a warm welcome and great service.

We were greeted by the manager (owner?) who also served us. We shared the fried beetroot with feta starter and both ordered the spareribs. The ribs were a whole rack each of baby backs, very tender fall-off-the-bone and not greasy, with a nice sweet and thick sauce. Coming from Kansas City, we know when ribs are done well, and these hit the mark. The dinners included a very nice mixed green salad and excellent chipped fries. The food and service were stellar. With two beers, the starter and two dinners we spent €55 – a good price for an excellent dinner! We were too full to sample dessert but the brownies were tempting....
