Tootje caught our eye along the Haarlemmerstraat and Blauwpoortsbrug for its welcoming, cozy atmosphere. There were plenty of places to sit with a great view or to play one of their board games. Caresse and Nick go above and beyond to make you feel at home there.

We ordered a salted caramel iced coffee, white chocolate iced coffee (both with oat milk), and the avocaTo smash sandwich. The sandwich was filling and delicious as it comes on two slices, which we shared. The bread was both crunchy and pillowy supporting the toppings. The chile coupled with the pomegranate molasses and fresh cherry tomatoes were a beautiful combo. You feel satisfied afterwards sipping your coffee.

We were also treated with their Oma's apple pie, the best we've ever had! The nicely spiced apples weren't mushy, but had a soft crunch. I recommend having a bit of their handmade whip cream to top it off with a bite of apple to have a memorable experience. The crust was the right amount for each bite, too, without being overly sweet.

Both Tootje and Nick were delightful and attentive conversationalists where we learned the meaning behind the cafe's name. Caresse's parents would call her Tootje as a nickname based off a character from Jan Kruis' comics (Jan, Jans en de kinderen) who she resembles. Her heartwarming story permeates throughout the experience as if you're also part of a cherished memory. We hope others get to experience their business as we have. Bravo and congrats on the new...

Update: Now in English.

I would like to share my constructive review of this place. While the food was of good quality (normal/small portions) and the price was average, there are areas that could be improved.

The lunch menu could be expanded, as the current options feel more suited for a pre-lunch or brunch.

Regarding the restaurant itself, I strongly recommend that the owner and staff reconsider the minimum level of cleanliness required. There was visible dust on the shelves, windows (which were old and almost broken), chairs, and tables. Additionally, the menu and floor were noticeably dirty, covered in some kind of syrup or liquid.

We were shocked when my friend received a dirty straw with her drink. Thankfully, the staff replaced it when we requested a new one. How is it even possible that the waitress is preparing food at the same time as serving coffee customers, without even washing her hands in between?

I hope this review helps...

We planned a surprise baby shower at Tootje with high tea and it was so lovely! They took care of the decorations and we were in a separate room which made the experience extra special and intimate. The owner, Caresse, was so responsive on email and made it a breeze to organise. She also played along when we I showed up with the completely oblivious mom-to-be and told us to please go upstairs since the other tables were reserved. And wow, the food! It did not stop coming - every time we thought it was done, they brought another tray with sandwiches, cookies, and home-made pasteis da nada (wow!). We actually all left with left-overs because it was too good to waste. If you want to make a special event intimate and stress-free, I'd really recommend...

I really don’t know how this place could get a 4.8 star rating. We went there for our first and also last time… The spot looks cute from the outside, but the dirtiness of every single cup, cutlery or plate was unbelievable! We ordered a coke and the glass had stains all over it with some water and black specks of dirt in it. The cutlery had the same thing. The worst though was when we were served the food. By this time we didn’t even really want to touch it. We ordered pancakes, that came served on a plate that still had avocado sticking on it, to make sure you would know what the person before you had been eating… We also had an acai bowl, which I taste tested but it was honestly really bad. It just tasted earthy and not at all how it should‘ve.

Hygiene Concerns! I recently dined at Tootje Cafe and had a mixed experience. While the food was good and the staff was friendly, I was disappointed to see a bottle of cleaning products and a dirty rag left on the table where the visitors were sitting. It made me question the restaurant’s hygiene practices. Not only is this unappetizing, but it’s also a health concern. Cleaning supplies should be stored properly, and rags should not be left where customers eat. I hope the management takes better care of these details because the food and atmosphere were otherwise enjoyable. A little more attention to cleanliness could make this a great dining spot.
