I usually never leave reviews for restaurants, but I had one of the best meals of my life last night at Restaurant WY.
Every course was creative, with just enough surprise to keep things interesting - yet not so much that things got weird/pretentious - everything was above all, very tasty. At the start, I must admit I got a little concerned when the one of the amuse bouches was "assembled" table-side with tweezers, but the actual courses were all "normal" - and very good.
From the langoustine in the first course to the pigeon in the main course (if this is what chef Wouter can do with pigeon, I look forward to what he can do with duck) to the superb dessert at the end (I will never look at kohlrabi the same way again), the standard of dishes never dipped through the evening. Flavours were not boring/conventional, but interesting, harmonious and above all - the food was very very tasty.
The excellent meal was complimented perfectly by the sensitive service and on-point wine pairing courtesy of his partner Ylja. Water was refilled through the evening efficiently. Wine glasses were quietly cleared without fuss. Staff were sensitive to timing courses in a manner that was not rushed, but also not too tardy - the pacing here was perfect. Service was actually better than other fancy (up to 2 starred places) I have been to previously.
Vibes were stylish/elegant, yet cosy. I think there were maybe 14 or 16 seats in total? I went as a solo diner, but the atmosphere is perfect for date nights or even introducing a new partner to a parent (I was pretty sure that another table was undergoing this experience).
I cannot recommend Restaurant WY highly enough. It (along with my whole trip to Maastricht) was a spur of the moment decision, and the wonderful meal I had there has crystallised a decision to return someday - with my wife!
This review I think arrives on the 1st anniversary of WY's opening - I really wish Ylja and Wouter all the best with their venture, and may there be many more years ahead of Restaurant WY! They really care, and it shows in...
Read moreReally enjoy the experience at Wy. Excellent service and a very interesting menu. The breads were excellent, the wines and drinks were excellent. Very happy with the monkfish. To be honest, I was disappointed with the sweatbreads; they were undercooked and gelatinous/chewy. The Fois gras dish was nice but it was a bit too busy, for my taste, and overpowered the fois gras. I loved everything else except the two dishes...
