Restaurant Review: Wen Chow in Maastricht
A Culinary Highlight of Cantonese Cuisine
A day trip to Maastricht ended with a memorable culinary experience: dinner at the Cantonese restaurant Wen Chow. Making a same-day reservation for a Friday evening was surprisingly easy—already a good indication of the restaurant’s efficiency.
Atmosphere & Service
Upon entering, the traditional Cantonese decor immediately stood out. The lighting was pleasantly dim, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. There was no background music, but this did not detract from the experience; the thoughtful table arrangement and warm ambiance more than compensated.
The service was exceptional. The staff was incredibly friendly, professional, and remarkably attentive. One waiter, in particular, stood out for his humorous and charming approach, adding to the overall positive experience. Service was swift and efficient—there were hardly any wait times, requests were fulfilled immediately, and special requests were accommodated without hesitation. The staff maintained a perfect balance of attentiveness, always nearby without being intrusive.
Food & Drinks
The menu offered a wide selection of traditional Cantonese dishes at surprisingly reasonable prices. The inclusion of pictures was a helpful touch, making it easier to navigate the choices.
The starters were outstanding—perfectly seasoned, well-balanced, and incredibly fresh. Even for someone who prefers saltier flavors, there was no need for additional seasoning. The sauces provided at the table complemented the dishes beautifully.
The main courses continued to impress with their freshness, quality, and elegant presentation. Even the dessert, a carefully plated ice cream dish, was a delightful highlight.
The drink selection was standard but perfectly adequate. The house-made iced tea was particularly well presented and a refreshing choice.
Price-Quality Ratio
The value for money was excellent. Given the high quality of both the food and service, the prices were more than fair—if anything, slightly lower than expected for such a top-tier experience. This alone makes Wen Chow a place worth returning to.
Final Verdict
Wen Chow excels in every important category: atmosphere, service, food, and pricing. The restaurant is an ideal choice for romantic dinners, business meals, and family gatherings alike. With its perfect combination of superb cuisine, outstanding service, and a welcoming ambiance, Wen Chow receives a strong recommendation.

Read moreIf you had asked me to give a rating the first time I went, I would have given 5/5. Excellent food, excellent service. The second time had serious problems, though:
The waitress didn't seem to know what she was doing. Service was not on point.
The singapore rice noodles were bland, especially compared to one of the other restaurants in the immediate area.
The first time I went to the restaurant, I ordered my dim sum all at once, which ended up being a problem because they brought it out all at once. I ended up having to rush through it because some of the dishes must be eaten hot. The second time, I tried ordering food in stages to prevent this, but then was told off for doing this by the manager.
They were out of more than half of the dishes on their dim sum menu. Every time I tried to order something, I was told they didn't have any more.
The food gave both my husband and I urgent diarrhea that set in barely 30 minutes after we finished our food. We did not eat anything else besides the food at the restaurant that could have caused this.

Read moreWe had some recommendation from an Asian friend who regularly comes from Aachen. Once being around, I took my family for a good Chinese dish including dim sum. I proposed to go for all with the menu. All specialities of the house, you would expect a good cross section of signature dishes. Forget the imagination of real Chinese food if once originally enjoyed. We had an average dish composition, not bad but also not overwhelming, considering a menu price of 42 EUR. Dim sum was not served but some poor variation of pancake with duck. Main dishes beef, chicken, shrimps on hot plate and greens. The shrimps dish was above average but the rest wasn't. Maybe, you should come with some Asian friends and make sure you want the original stuff. As European who is frequently travelling in Asia, the food was below standard and I also felt not treated too well as a customer. Sorry to say, I...
