Read moreI had almost given up on finding a good bar on Curacao and Aruba. To be honest, I had no more desire to visit a bar here. The most cocktails here on the ABC isle are really bad in taste, as an example the Aruba Ariba - where actually only sweet is present. By chance I came across the Apotek Speakeasy via Google and saw the menu I thought, give this bar another chance. I got into my borrowed car and drove off about 10 kilometers just to visit a bar.
About the interior: it is very cozy and a very classically furnished. The bar culture is very old and already and if the rumors are true the first bar was opened in New York in 1851. Therefore, a classic ambience - for me - always fits. As we all know, there is no need to argue about what humans are like or not. I also like modern bars, if everything fits as a composition and is coherent. This is the case here.
The staff is polite and talkative, the service is very nice and also communicative!
Now to the important part! The cocktails are really very good there and also the presentation and preparation is very appealing. Many ingredients are made by themselves and they experiment a lot with new things (peanuts are put in spirits etc.). I hope in the remaining three nights I manage to visit the bar again. Who knows when I'll be stranded here next time. A real little gem for people who...
Read moreLocated inside a former apothecary, Apotek plays on this motif with clever "remedies" pinned to the wall that offer inventive but not overly baroque (thanks goodness!) recipes. But in the tradition of a speakeasy, you should consider especially the option of simply providing a few basic guidelines to a mixologist (alas, I forgot the name of ours), who will then use your sparse instructions to create a custom cocktail. All of ours were excellent. As seems to be the case in the Caribbean, the cocktails tended to be sweet, so if it's best to adjust your custom instructions accordingly. If you enjoy craft cocktails and the opportunity to see a mixologist at work, this spot is well worth the visit.
2014 UPDATE: this year’s experience was even better than the first. We enjoyed sitting at the bar while admiring the craftwork of Jacob, our mixologist. Once again, the recipes or “prescriptions” were inventive yet balanced— including an ingenious Boulevardier garnished with cacao shavings. And the presentation of each cocktail was impressive (see the photos below by Anna). Be sure to make a...
