Over the years we would walk pass a Sals place wondering are they as good as they say they are and do they taste as they proclaim to be the best pizza authentic and large and yummy. The first Sals many years I saw was in Queen Street, I walked in and looked attractive and inviting. Remember going to the counter to order and walking back out why I could not believe it's price back than would be plus 10years something like $25?, all I could think of was "it's a pizza". I can get a pizza for a 3rd of the price maybe 2 at that price. But how wrong I was all those years ago, 2 weeks ago we passed a Sals in Mt Eden and decided to go in and try one as I remembered my granddaughter talking about its the best pizza her mum bought, I looked at the price and it was now $35, I quickly glance at the selection and ordered a cheese classic new York and a pepperoni with garlic breads totalling over $70 well I thought this is pricey but a taste test of 2 slices purchased won us over. What a taste of quality, preparation with care of procedures and baking delicacy and a delightful surprise to our pallets. It just goes to show sometimes when you think of going to a new place try it because there are top quality food places that will let your spend be worth it even if you do it as a monthly treat to stay within budget as we have found that it is a great treat for family and money well spent. We got the big new yorker size and that was amazing treat as we had leftovers for servings 2 children and 4 adults wow. Mt Eden Sals customer service was exceptional as was the sitting cubicles cozy with couple of tables and a screen TV while eating. Decal of how Sals history was built and founded was truly in the recipe from the Base to the sauce and recipe great. Only drawback was that it is on the main mt eden busy road but there are parking you just have to look down side streets but it was worth parking a block away and walking to its location, it was worth the find and definitely not really a drawback as we will be resisting. One good food for thought is that all Sals pizza outlets may not be all 5 stars but when you find one that's the place for repeat of business. Food industry is tough but when you tick all the boxes you know you will go that extra mile to make a trip and keep the budget by treating the family. It's Covid lock down 4 and I thought that would be a great treat to plan when we are allowed to socialise and places are open for...
Read moreSal’s Pizza in Mt Eden delivers a truly authentic New York-style pizza experience. From the moment you step in, you're greeted by the comforting aroma of freshly baked dough, sizzling pepperoni, and melted mozzarella. It’s the kind of smell that makes your stomach rumble and your expectations rise — and thankfully, Sal’s lives up to the hype.
I ordered two classic slices: pepperoni and cheese. Both were exceptional. The pepperoni slice was perfectly crisp on the edges, with generous layers of spicy pepperoni that curled up slightly as they cooked, just like a real New York slice should. The cheese slice had a rich, gooey stretch and the tomato sauce underneath balanced it out with a slightly tangy bite. The crust was spot on — thin and foldable in the center with a nice chew, but still strong enough to hold the toppings without going soggy. The base had that beautiful light char underneath, giving it that authentic pizza oven flavor.
What really blew me away though was the pepperoni wheel. It’s not just a gimmick — it’s a masterpiece. The dough is rolled around layers of pepperoni and cheese, then baked to golden perfection. Every bite gives you the perfect combination of soft, cheesy interior and a slightly crunchy outer layer. It's compact, flavorful, and ideal if you're after something handheld...
Read moreThis was my first visit to Sal's Pizza. And I need to say up front that I was raised in New York and lived in NYC for a few years and visited the world famous John's Pizza on Bleeker street quite often. So... I'm gonna hold Sal's to a pretty high bar that may be, by the reckoning of some, a bit unfair. However, I was surprised how good Sal's was. The crust was thin like NY style Pizza, and I have to say the ingredients were extremely good. I also say this as a vegan so I ordered a Vegan Veggie Pie with no cheese and found it to be a pretty good experience given that the yummiest bit was left off. Good wholesome pizza! what more can you ask for? My one nit would be that Sal's does not offer a Vegan cheese option. I'm not sayin' they have to offer Vegan Cheese, I'm just sayin' (using my best NY mafia accent) it would be good for your health if they were to...
