A successful trip to Lyttleton always involves a leisurely brunch with as many of my family members who are in NZ as possible. Today was one of the best. 3 family units managed to get their act together sufficiently to be there..even managing to be there together at one point. This meant several trips to the counter, multiple orders, and the odd obscure request. My dithering (and forgetting 'who wanted what') was cheerfully tolerated by both staff and other customers in the queue. There's nowhere in Canterbury with a more family friendly vibe. Great coffee, and for me, a delightfully light yet moist and tasty Apple and Bosenberry muffin, with oodles of butter on the side. Others were all happy with their various choices, the toasted (real) sourdough and honey was paticularly good, and an excellent alternative 'spread' to my wife's preferred apricot conserve. My great granddaughter's dad's savoury muffin, similarly light moist and tasty. One of the more sweet toothed grown up grandchildren had the plum and brown butter cake, which with a nice side of yogurt was that satisfying sweet and sharp taste combo, I know this as I managed to steal a mouthful. The family vibe was helped along by nice background music from the DJ, who was happy to play my request, and in conversation about matters musical and cinematic displayed a subtle sense of humour. The one slight wrinkle in an otherwise smooth and very professional level of service was one of the waiting staff was obviously either having a bad day, or had let the stress of the busy...
Read moreLyttelton Coffee Company is an absolute gem, nestled in the heart of Lyttelton with stunning mountain views that perfectly complement its cozy, lodge-like interior. The space feels warm and welcoming, with a rustic cabin vibe that’s ideal for relaxing and soaking in the unique charm of this historic port town.
Their avocado toast is nothing short of amazing—hands down one of the most delicious I’ve had. I asked to switch the poached eggs for scrambled, and they happily accommodated, which shows their commitment to excellent customer service. The coffee here is truly exceptional—one of the best I’ve had in New Zealand, where coffee can often be hit or miss.
What truly impressed me, though, was their commitment to sustainability. Lyttelton Coffee Company seems to promote local everything, and they don’t offer takeaway coffee- I am guessing that they are aligning with their efforts to reduce waste. They had a sign promoting awareness about cruise pollution, which really highlights their environmentally conscious approach. Interestingly, they also don’t serve decaf coffee. While I didn’t ask why, it made me wonder—could it be because certain decaffeination processes aren’t environmentally friendly?
The atmosphere here is relaxed yet vibrant, making it a wonderful spot to unwind and enjoy a meal or a perfectly brewed cup of coffee. I left feeling refreshed and inspired by their dedication to sustainability and quality. If you’re in Lyttelton, this is a must-visit destination for great food, excellent coffee, and an...
Read moreHave visited this cafe twice. The first time me and my friend agreed that the atmosphere was great, views are awesome and the food was good, however the service was average (they were impatient and you really need to read ALL the signs, in case you make a ridiculous request like wanting to order something from the kitchen when it was closed and don't ask where your food is when you have waited too long). But we decided that we like the overall vibe and only have to put up with the service for a couple of minutes and they may have had an off day.
I took my parents to the cafe since we were in the area and I have never been so embarrassed. My mum has a heart condition (caffeine is a no go) and my dad is a diabetic. When we requested a decaf coffee, we got laughed at by the server and she promptly told us they don't "do decaf". When my dad asked for a cold drink without sugar she told us that there was only water. I felt so embarrassed and outraged. The overall impression is that you need to adhere to their 'chic' vibe and if not, your outrageous for asking for a drink. I always prided myself as a New Zealander on being welcoming and hosting others by making them feel comfortable. This cafe is too particular and snobby, and although the food and the views are great the service provided was too much and I will actively avoid this cafe in the future.
I have read through your reviews and you might be getting 3-4 stars but if you read through people's comments there is a common displeasure about...
