A really great historic pub where cricket fans crowd the tables and sip craft beers. There's a great selection of beers to choose from as well as a full bar if you're in the mood. Four Avenues Brewing Co is located behind the brewery and three of their beers are always featured in house, but there are 15 other regulars on tap for you to try. There truly is a beer for everyone here. Take a peek at their menu as they have a wide variety of stand out barfood from spiced free-range chicken wings and chicken and pork terrine to jalapeno cheesedip and homemade pork crackling. There's also soup, squid and vegetarian nachos. Pomeroy's often has events going on, so check out their website to make sure you don't miss out on beer tasting fun! We visited during the Cricket World Cup and sat amongst crazy fans at their family seating tall top tables. There were also booth options and table options, but the space is limited. There is a small pool table near the wall where you can entertain yourself if you don't understand the rules to cricket.
Despite being one of the best drinking establishments in ChCh, they also pride themselves on their commitment to quality, healthy and fresh menus at their Victoria restaurant. I recommend making a booking for this restaurant at least 48 hours in advance. There is a full lunch and dinner menu with anything from steak and venison to beer-battered fish and herb+gruyere gnocchi.
Pomeroy's still is an Inn with a B&B next door. Visiting or just don't want to drive home? Be sure to make a booking in advance to stay in their adorable cottage. This is an iconic spot in ChCh for everything from atmosphere to craft beers and delicious meals. Stop in and check out...
Read moreIt was like going back in time walking into this pub. Old English style, done fairly well. The atmosphere was jovial, albeit a bit rowdy from the large group of men in the corner, which made me retreat from the table by the fire for a table in the quieter restaurant side. Have to say the fire was a bit lack luster anyway, and wasn't pumping out any significant heat.
The staff were exceptional in how welcome they made you feel and their service impeccable. I had popped into Pomeroy's after having an early dinner elsewhere, because I felt like a mulled wine before retreating home, and found them on Google under mulled wine close to my home.
I am a bit of a mulled wine connoisseur, and make my own for parties. Their mulled wine was too sweet and not spicy enough for me, but it was soothing nonetheless. I felt like a light meal so ordered the fried cauliflower with ranch hot sauce and gherkins. That was a mistake on my part. The food came out quickly and I asked for no hot sauce. The cauliflower was cooked fine, but the lack of flavour with just a smattering of another sauce, left it bland to eat.
I decided to check out the dessert menu after rejecting the fried cauliflower. To my pleasant surprise there was chocolate dulce on the menu! It was perfectly smooth and creamy, and cracking the chocolate coating around the outside with my spoon, was the piste de resistance of my whole evening. Just divine!
I would recommend coming here with a group of friends, for a warm and friendly, relaxed old world vibe, who are a very hungry crowd, as portion...
Read moreWhat's not to love about this place, anywhere with an evolving mix of 30+ beers - including hand pull cask - deserves recognition, right?
So you might think that it's full of sad men drinking copious amounts of beer and lamenting about failed relationships and cars. Wrong. It's frequented by a diverse mix of life loving people and is always packed, not just because of the beer, but the great team that run the place and its unique ambience in this city.
It's not just about the alcohol either because Victoria more than knows her way around a kitchen. The menu and quality of food is gastro-pub standard, which might explain why the restaurant tables (for every size of party) are always full, from each school night to the sabbath. My son had his farewell dinner here last month, he had a beautiful Beef Wellington & I went for a traditional roast pork dinner. The servings were generous & food so good, my son polished off his plate before eating half of my roast!
If you miss this heritage brick pub on your travels, with a full length wooden bar, it's vast array of beers and vibe in abundance, you'll miss out... but it leaves more room for me to keep...
