Cave a Vin — Restaurant in Devonport-Takapuna

Last night was the third or fourth time visiting Cave a Vin. This time I went to celebrate my bday with other friends who also enjoy wine as much as I do. James and Mike make you feel as if you would go to their house and they treat you to the best they can offer you. Unlike many other places in Auckland, the food here is outstanding, generous and unpretentious. The service is stellar and their knowledge and passion for wine is great. There is a European atmosphere in the way that you can sit and eat a very well selected charcuterie and cheese board, and this is not your average countdown Brie, but serious French superstars like Delice de Bourgogne and Comte. Like to try new stuff? Hold my wine: every time I visit there’s a new special dish. I tried from free range superb roast chicken, canadian beef with poutine, and last night they served duck ragu with homemade cavatelli and the most tender beef cheek on very creamy mash. Gave a one star but even that was a stretch. Arrived and tasted the wine. They couldn't tell us anything about the wine. The red wine was on ice but should be at room temperature.

It was 5.30pm so we order the chips and aioli for $9. We got 1/4 a bag of bluebird potato crisps and a runny thing that was sour cream with something added.

Others ordered 'Fish and Chips' and got quarter a bag of bluebird chips and a can of sardines.

Sourdough bread was two slices of bread and some butter for $9.

Absolutely revolting, overpriced food and very cheap french wine. Would not recommend to anyway. Skip down the road and...

This place is amazing. I almost don’t want to review it because I don’t want people knowing about it. My wife and I have been coming here for every anniversary or birthday since we learnt about it. Hands down one of the best sourdoughs I’ve ever had so don’t pass it up. But in general this is a sit down and be served by amazing people place. You will be offered a taste of anything you desire and then they will generously pour for you. The food is amazing as well and can’t be passed up. Sit back, relax and let the wine flow.
