Monthien Thai Restaurant — Restaurant in Devonport-Takapuna

We were just walking by and saw this cosy restaurant and decided to try it. We were lucky to get a table on a busy Saturday evening and the staff cheerily welcomed us. The atmosphere was great; just the right level of lighting, convivial diners, and the two of us were given a little table that had a bamboo screen on the side, which allowed us to have our own little pocket of privacy.

We ordered the sizzling lamb and seafood dishes, served with rice, and the flavors were rich and satisfying. Healthy portion sizes but not so much that we couldn't finish. Plenty of good veggies came with the mains. While we didn't have enough room for dessert on this occasion, they still brought a little basket with 4 Oreo cookies and several tasty mints to enjoy.

Would love to return to this fine restaurant one day. It is an asset to Milford. Easy to get Street parking...

When this restaurant opened several years ago, we did try it. And we weren’t impressed. It wasn’t bad, but it was nothing great to begin with. Hence, for several years we have avoided the restaurant. However, yesterday, it was a Monday end most of the restaurants were closed. Which is why we decided to take a chance and try it again.

I have to say that we were more than pleasantly surprised. We found the food to be excellent. And this is not because we had low expectations, it was just very well-made and very tasty.

I was quite predictable in my choice of meal, I enjoy the green curry and the rice. And we also had some Pad Thai.

A rip off , We ordered the sizzling pork hotplate and a single rice (2 dining) and menu shows very clearly the cost was $30 each for the pork . Therefore bill should have been $63 but when we went to pay the amount was $79 . When questioned the waitress who could barely speak English we where told additional cost was for the large portion. The menu makes no mention of any large portion at all. The restaurant had people coming and going so a limited challenge was made but not wanting to make a scene and not being able to "Get through" to the waitress we settled the account , We and now many of our friends will not return which is dissapointing as we have been a client for...
