Wonderful to see scandibuns has a store. I used to purchase cinnamon rolls from the markets when I lived in Auckland. I had to have a slice of the princess cake - to die for! A real taste of Sweden. Coffee and cake, fika! Both go hand in hand. The coffee is filtered, swedish style and oh so good! If you want to take someone special for coffee and cake, support scandibuns. I waited an entire year to try Semla!

I first learned about Semla from the Japanese anime One Piece, where it’s the favorite treat of the character Big Mom.

Last April, I asked a shop about it, and they told me it would be available in January—so I’ve been looking forward to it ever since!

One of the great things about New Zealand is that you can find authentic food from all over the world. This was a real Semla from Sweden!

I had imagined it would be something light, like a cream puff, but it was actually quite heavy and filling. The white cream inside wasn’t sweet—it was just pure whipped cream. As a Japanese person, I’m so used to sweetened whipped cream that it tasted a bit surprising, but it was still really good.

At the bottom, there was a thick paste with a flavor kind of like almond jelly (杏仁豆腐), and it was sweet. I guess that’s why the whipped cream on top doesn’t need to be sweet.

Sandwiches: very good bread. We tried their subs, rye, and flat bread. All of them high quality. Fillings are very generous and flavorsome. Sweets: have tried many cinnamon buns, and this is my favorite so far. Good dough, right amount of sweetness. Cardamom buns were so good too.
