Wonderful to see scandibuns has a store. I used to purchase cinnamon rolls from the markets when I lived in Auckland. I had to have a slice of the princess cake - to die for! A real taste of Sweden. I first learned about Semla from the Japanese anime One Piece, where it’s the favorite treat of the character Big Mom.
Last April, I asked a shop about it, and they told me it would be available in January—so I’ve been looking forward to it ever since!
One of the great things about New Zealand is that you can find authentic food from all over the world. This was a real Semla from Sweden!
I had imagined it would be something light, like a cream puff, but it was actually quite heavy and filling. The white cream inside wasn’t sweet—it was just pure whipped cream. As a Japanese person, I’m so used to sweetened whipped cream that it tasted a bit surprising, but it was still really good.
At the bottom, there was a thick paste with a flavor kind of like almond jelly (杏仁豆腐), and it was sweet. I guess that’s why the whipped cream on top doesn’t need to be sweet.
