Nishiki Japanese Restaurant in Botany — Restaurant in Howick

We called the resturant to make a booking we asked for 6:45 we where told that wasn't avaliable so we told between 7;15 and 7:30pm was avaliable. We said that would be great! So we arrived at the resturant at around 7:20pm we where seated straight away perfect.

All was going well until half way through the our mains at 7:50 we where ask if we where going to be much longer as the table would be need in 10 mins. We Hadn't even been there for 45mins!!! It's was so rude you never ever ask someone to leave a resturant whilst they are still eating! Especially because we hadn't even been there an hour! The guy who made the booking was also the one had basically told us to hurry up! We complained to him he didn't even know what time we arrived he mentioned I had you booked at 6:45 sorry.!!! Really is it that hard. He mentioned that we are really busy tonight, you guys are always really busy! We are regular customers and sadly he was not at all apologetic with a smirk on his face! My wife and I have been coming here for years. Would have eaten here 50 times. Rarely we would have a random dish that isnt so good, but this time was different. Half of our dishes was below average. The Beef Carpaccio, usually one of our favorites was cut so thick it was unenjoyable. The thickest peice would have been 4mm. They have also changed the may on all dishes that use mayo (including the Carpaccio) and isnt as nice as usual. The Teriyaki Beef skewer was also very bad, which surprised us for a new item on the menu. Lastly for the bad, the Unagi Don (which would be my favorite dish normally) was terrible. Either you have changed the species of eel or not prepared it correctly (or both) as the skin was terribly rubbery. Not all bad though, the Salmon Namaharu was fantastic and the other few dishes were pretty good. Unsure what was going on tonight but too many dishes were different/worse. Nishiki will always be dear to our hearts as it is me and my sister’s favourite Japanese restaurant. It is our go to and we have celebrated a lot of birthdays and milestones here. Although we keep looking at their Menu, we normally order the same things anyway haha. Our staple is Miso Dengaku, Imo Mochi, Mushroom Nikuzume and Yaki Onigiri. Sometimes we spice things up with 2 or 3 new items to find things to add to our staple! We love the fact that you just order with the iPad now too as we get to scroll through the menu and order in our own time. It is especially accommodating to my sister who doesn’t enjoy ordering in person much and usually makes me do it :P We craved it so much during lockdown that as soon as delivery was available, we ordered through it too! It came at the right time that we booked the delivery.
