Arrived in Napier later in the day and was drawn to stay here so we tried to book direct online and ended up frustrated as the day/month reverted to US geared month/day. So we used another service to book expecting the noted ‘free car parking’. On arrival the receptionist told us that no longer applied (due to not booking direct) and a charge would apply ($11/overnight). The room was OK - for price paid it would be nice to be supplied shower cap (in room) and an actual information booklet (in room) regarding local services/attractions/dining options. The Wi-Fi password provided didn’t work (even when receptionist offered another network to access). Additional to that I had an interesting night…thought there was a presence (friendly male) in the room /kept smelling tobacco or smoke smell in the bathroom, hearing music…not the usual experience as it were. Only after I left did I decide to do some online research and was honestly fascinated. Hopefully management embrace the energy that clearly has a strong connection here and treat it with the respect that is deserved. Not all guests will sense what came through on our stay but don’t ignore those who do. Such potential to be exceptional if managed respectfully. Strongly sense we were ‘pulled in’ to stay in the room we did. Would like to rate so much higher as you can offer so much more quite easily via a few minor adjustments. Totally understand wanting to channel the attraction away from certain things…but you can certainly offer something that just needs acknowledgment rather...

Normally, I really can't be bothered about character, as long as a hotel is clean, comfortable, spacious and has great facilities in the room, we're pretty happy. The Art Deco Masonic Hotel on the other hand, hit "character" out of the ballpark. We booked 2 rooms due to our family size and we were intrigued by how each room had a different theme! It's so suitable to beautiful Napier, which is a very nice little "Broadway"-ish and artsy town. In short, the hotel was really classy and is brimming with character. The amenities in the hotel were great.

The reception is friendly and helpful, and when we entered the hotel, it feels like we're in, for lack of a better description, a classic American hotel run by Frank Sinatra or something like that! We felt welcome in the hotel. The fact the hotel also provides a place to park is a big bonus.

The hotel is effectively situated in Napier city itself, so walking out of the hotel, we could go to the pretty new-looking Museum next door, or just walk around the city to shops and places to eat (there are many to choose from!), or just walk out to the seaside and enjoy the breezy stroll. The main street itself has lots of things to see, because Napier simply oozes character. It was a highlight of our entire holiday.

Without a doubt, we'll return to this hotel when we come back to Napier. Highly...

Looks great but it's a mess. First, there is no free parking or even a paid parking lot near the hotel. You need to park your car in a car park a few blocks away or on the street. There are meters everywhere around the hotel but there are a couple of 2 and 3 hour zones nearby. Meters stop working at 6pm, so you can park in those spaces overnight. The hotel is very noisy. The rooms are on the second floor, but the first floor is an Irish pub, which you can imagine is always noisy and you can hear everything. If you get a street facing room, you'll hear all the street traffic. There are doors slamming open and closed all night long, and that's when you don't have obnoxious guests screaming at 2 and 3 in the morning. Our room was tiny, but nicely decorated. The location is also good, right across from the ocean and near the shopping district and museum. I would choose another hotel next time.

Old historic hotel with some lovely architectural features. Car parking is a block away and depending on how you have booked your stay, this could be included or an extra cost. There is a loading bay for 2/3 cars outside the entrance so you can unload your luggage before moving your car. The main entrance, though, is only accessed by stairs. I presume if you have mobility issues or can’t lift your luggage, you would need to enter via the bar/restaurant. The hotel is well positioned in the heart of the town and on the seafront and there is nice shared balcony at the front overlooking the sea. Our room was a decent size although it was a little tight for the luggage. It was also overlooking some bars, which mean’t that it was a bit noisy in the early evening with some loud music being played, however, this had ended by 10pm so didn’t disturb our sleep.
