Nestled in between car mechanics and panel beaters is Coffee Lane, where you’ll find Excelso Coffee.

Excelso is an oasis in the semi-industrial desert of this area. It’s only a five-minute walk from the heart of the city–but it might as well be a world away. They’re one of the originals in the Tauranga coffee scene, with an incredible reputation of producing fantastic coffee and excellent baristas.

The vibrant green of the indoor plants on the wall contrast nicely with the corkboard panelling and polished concrete floors to create an inviting space that encourages you to sit, talk, and relax. From the right spot in the cafe, you can see the roastery in action. You’ll get lost in the meditative movement, sound, and smell of the roasting process. Coupled with the buzz of conversation, you quickly realize you’re not just drinking a cup of coffee, but really experiencing something more.

Excelso has a big range of coffee on offer, with at least nine different options available for espresso, filter, batch brew, or to bag up and take away. Pair that with a great selection of sweet treats, toasted sandwiches, and smoothies on offer, you’ll be absolutely spoilt for choice.

Excelso is also an absolutely amazing place to sit, chill, drink a coffee and listen to your favourite podcast. The Aunty Donna Podcast is my favourite one to listen to - with Broden, Mark and Zach, and sometimes some guests, they really hope you enjoy the podcast. People will look at your weird, cos you'll be laughing ALL THE...

I am visiting Tauranga regularly in the last couple of months for work and the terrible espresso at my usual accomodation with the mediocre-at-best milk drink in the office did not make it very enjoyable. It's surprising how, erm, average the coffe is wherever I go, so I was so happy to find a speciality coffee place where the friendly staff knows about the things they sell. I had an Ethiopian brew (brewed in a Kalita for roughly the price of a random flat white, mind you) and I was very satisfied to see all the available information about the coffee I was drinking. Varietal, the growers name, region, tasting notes, all there as they should be - showing respect to the grower and the quality of the product. After two days of meh coffees the beautiful filter coffee I got was invigorating and rejuvenating and all in all a great experience. I am looking forward to go to Tauranga and visit Excelso again.

Also it was great getting answers to my questions about the beans I was taking home to share the experience. Worth my five stars and no mistake.

If you are after carefully sourced and roasted speciality coffee, brewed with pride, I strongly recommend a visit to Excelso, you won't regret it. I'm...

Hidden down a lane way is one of Taurangas best coffee roasters, with 8+ varietys to buy right from behind the counter. Their Ethiopian single origin beans, being one of my favorites.

I had an large almond milk flat white of their Stag blend. It was excellently made, by their friendly and knowledgeable staff. Soft foam milk with that sheen on top, prepared in an Almond milk exclusive jug.

To be honest the coffee wasn't to my taste which I would put down to the Almond milk used, any one who uses milk alternatives will know the hit and miss nature of this.

It can be hard to find, and seating is at a premium. It is definitely worth a visit, which must explain why I keep going out of my...
