What a hidden gem! So we were returning from a road trip and decided to stay a night in Ohakune despite it being the “off season”.
This little town has a lovely Mountain village vibe… and this cafe was in a Sunny central location just opposite New World. What made it stand out is I’ve found it challenging finding delicious healthy meals while on holiday and this little cafe could cater for both myself and my child.
The owner was super friendly and full of local knowledge about the town and activities, and she had such a selection for a small establishment.
What I needed was something to eat low in added sugar because of a health condition and there were a number of options. She also went above and beyond to say she could easily whip things up for people who have dietary requirements or preferences like gf, vegan, low sugar and she tries to use natural sugars in her baking with fresh ingredients. And I can see quite a selection for getting takeaway lunches for excursions such as good idea! May be useful to call ahead to order something if you’re in a hurry and need something specific.
There were a few bar stool seats in a very warm sunny window which was lovely to thaw out in on a cold morning.
My daughter had the salmon bagel, some chia seed puddings, and we got some takeaway options for our drive home.
I wish this was a local little cafe as it has so much potential. Overall I actually think Ohakune makes a fantastic off season destination with lots to do in the outdoors. Or even as a good place to take a break from driving for a few hours, just 20 minutes off the main highway… there’s also a fantastic playground as you come into the town so for those struggling with wriggling children definitely worth a stop.
We will definitely be back soon and I’d like to actually book more time here out of the ski season since it wasn’t too busy but the perfect little escape from city life… only took about 3 hours from Wellington.
Or for any tourists visiting New Zealand, this is a very authentic little New Zealand town and worth a visit.
I was sorry to hear about the saw mill closure but hope the town can strum up more business in the off season to reinvigorate the town.
It’s like something out of a story book, and most of the locals seem to all know each other and take care of one another… next time I’ll bring our bikes as well since there’s a lot of trails to explore.
Delicious treats according to my daughter as well. And reasonable pricing given the cost of fresh ingredients.
I don’t always write reviews but yummy and relieved to find something more nutritious while away. 10/10
Also for those wanting some epic holiday pictures the views of the landscape and Mountains are beautiful.
Just across the road there is indoor rock climbing as well and my daughter loved it and wants to go back very soon, Jeremy really boosted her confidence and what a great way to burn some energy...

Both were excellent experiences. It is a small place with only one bar sitting area which up to 5 people can sit on. So either plan to take the food to somewhere or enjoy the coziness...
