Horrible Experience – Avoid at All Costs!

I booked two rooms for 5 people at the Rotorua Citizens Club through Expedia, but our experience was a nightmare. When we arrived, the place was busy, and the staff barely acknowledged us. After waiting 20 minutes, they told us they didn’t have the two rooms we booked. Instead, they offered one room with 6 small beds and no private bathroom – the bathroom was down the hall and shared with club members.

To make matters worse, they demanded extra payment, claiming there was a mistake on Expedia’s website. The staff were rude, unprofessional, and even laughed about the price issue. My wife is pregnant, my mom is over 70, and my 14-year-old daughter was with us – yet they showed no consideration for our situation.

When we called Expedia to report this, they said they couldn’t help us because the hotel needed to cancel the booking first. However, the hotel claimed their administration office was closed and wouldn’t reopen for three days.

The worst part? There were pictures of the managers on the wall, and one of them was the same person who rudely attended to us upon arrival! We felt completely disrespected and had no choice but to leave and find better accommodations.

The motel is a membership club that rents out rooms for outsiders. Perhaps because it is alive only on weekends and they want better utilization on weekdays. Apparently I was the only guest during weekdays as I did not see or hear anyone else in the place. On weekends there is a lot (maybe too much) activity going on in the club restaurant/bar downstairs, as the music plays loud.||The location is central in Rotorua and there is only a short walk to most restaurants, tourist info and bus stops. Supermarkets are little farther away but within walking distance. ||Rooms are adequate for a shorter stay. Bed is comfortable but near a window and the traffic may be disturbing. On regular nights the town is very quiet so that should not be a problem.||There is a daily room service, but they seem to only replace towels and empty the trash bin, nothing else.||Staff at the reception is not too friendly or interested in what they are doing, and serving customers is not their priority. A club we have been to many times and enjoyed every visit. ||But last Friday we arrived in Rotorua and phoned the Club about 8.20ish and asked for the van to pick us up (4 adults) and told the reception we were after a meal. We arrive, signed in, ordered drinks and went through to the restaurant area, 9pm. Got a table and went to order. We were greeted by a young guy that laughed as he told us the restaurant closed at 9, they actually looked like they were in the final stages of cleaning up!.||Great the clubs website say 10pm on Fridays.||Very disappointed and we never went back all weekend.||The rest of the staff (reception and bar) were great just not the restaurant. Update your website the times are wrong and the menu is out of date……….. simple things make a great club.||The upside is that we have now found the “Fat Dog” almost next door that does great meals.
