The Maharajas Restaurant & Bar Dunedin North — Restaurant in Otago

I'm not a foodie but i do love indian food/takeaways and have been to almost all the top rated Indian restaurants in the north island.. since moving here I've tried 4 different indian places in dunedin and Maharaja's easily takes the top spot. The restaurant itself is pretty nice compared your average indian restaurant, you could take a date or your family there and it's cozy and clean, although I usually just get takeaway. The wait staff are professional and do a great job, and the food is in my experience in the top 5 in the country for indian restaurants/takeaways. I feel like it's pretty reasonably priced for what you get as well. The starters/sides in particular are great value - some highlights are - spinach+onion bhaj is delicious and filling, and the naan is incredible (id recommend the mango peshwari naan, goes fantastic with a very hot curry if that's your thing). As far as dunedin is concerned, this is the spot you should go to for your curry cravings. We ordered Friday night pick up takeaway dinner from the maharaja restaurant last week. The mixed platter for two was absolutely stunning and one of the best we’ve ever had. The lamb sausage things were so delicious and the Samosa was perfect. We ordered a butter chicken mild to share and it was definitely an interesting/unique flavour unlike any other butter chicken we’ve had before, I think it was very heavy with the paprika. Not that we didn’t enjoy it but it was just very different to what we were expecting. Also worth noting that all the curries come with rice as that wasn’t initially clear online. When I went in to pick up our order, I was surprised that the very large and beautiful restaurant was so empty with only two tables occupied I really hope that more people support gems like this by visiting every so often and not only ordering takeaway. Worst customer service for delivery and awe full taste. I ordered dinner and had to wait more than an hour with quite a few phone calls made to check for delivery. The lady over the phone was very disrespectful and rude. She made me go in circles for delivery time when called each time to track order. once called and was told that guy left to deliver, after time passed and did not receive delivery so called again to check for delivery and was told that he is not going to deliver when I asked for a refund I was made to go in circles again and she was very abrupt.finally food was delivered at the wrong entrance and guy passed his apologies to be late.
