We drove all the way from Coopers Beach because we were previously impressed by Indian Spice in Mangonui before it was sadly shut down. Fortunately to our excitement, the quality of Indian Spice in Kaitaia was just as impressive! We ordered: Onion Bhaji, $8.99 Beef Korma, $12.99 Goan Fish Curry, $22.99 Stuffed Naan, $6.00 Raita, $4.50 This was a lot of food between two people, but we managed to get through our order with just some naan and curry to take back with us. The Onion Bhaji was irresistibly crispy, moorish and accompanied by a deliciously tangy sauce. The Beef Korma was served with the most tender meat. The Goan Fish Curry was expertly cooked, enveloped in vibrant flavours. We actually think this may be the best Indian food in New Zealand.

Stopped here on the way to Paihia. The Indo Chinese dishes were just better than average. We had the chilli chicken, and the lollipop. The goat biriyani was also good but nothing to rave about. The onion bhajjis were the best I had in Australia and NZ. I could go back just for that 😁. I still would give a 4 star rating because the service was good, and the onion bhajji

We had Paneer Tikka masala and Kadhai Paneer along with garlic naan. The Paneer was fresh and the food was really good. We also had chocolate brownie. They provided good portions and the prices were reasonable. A family runs this restaurant and they did a good job. Highly recommended to anyone.

Waiters asked how the food was:

Vegetarian Platter for 2: Onion Bhaji and vegetable patties were way over cooked, dry, yet over-oily with a mostly burned bitter flavour. Waiters both confirmed these were cooked once on a different day and not used, so bagged up, frozen and deep fried a second time - therefore overcooked, dry and bitter - Rehashed/recycled food.

Butter Chicken: Chicken was dry, overly salted with very low flavour due to lack of spices used.

Waiters both advised me the chef thought there was nothing wrong with these, even though they both agreed they were not good and apologised.

Suggestion:

  1. Chef has a reality check to avoid customers voting with their feet, especially considering we were the only ones in the restaurant in the middle of a long weekend.

  2. Waiters need only to simply thank customers for their feedback instead of hanging around for ages profusely apologising and offering a 10% discount.

  3. Waiters could ask what we wanted for desert to up-sell and make more income for the business. Instead this was not prompted.

  4. Use chicken thigh meat instead of breast meat which goes hard and dry easily.

Returned for lunch visit Nov 2022:

First time to Katia and happy to see a Indian resturant. Popped in a place was done out with a classy Indian theme. When going somewhere new for curry wasn't holding out big hopes for a knockout curry BOOM that's what we got. We got the vege options on lunch menu, perfect textures, layered flavouring, we like Indian hot and perfect heat level. Naans were bubbly with crispy parts. Yum. Kingfisher beer to top it off and we were set for the day and drive back to whangarei. Thanks for the top food we...
