Japanese-Peruvian! I've been waiting to write this review until I visited Azabu a second time. Azabu was officially my first meal in Auckland a week ago and it's officially now my favorite restaurant in the South Pacific. From the outside one might miss this stealthy restaurant as it virtually has no signage - reminiscent of all the best places in NYC. But this place requires zero gimmicks to attract its legions of devout patrons every night. Let the food and ambience do the talking! Dimly lit inside with simple chic decor, this is THE PLACE for a night out with your foodie friends as the concept here is to share plates. Heck you can even invite your drunk friends as it houses a bar in the far back. Dancey, uptempo music pipes through the speakers which sets the tone for your dining experience. Good-looking servers methodically intertwin with runners as they graciously bring out each plate and interpret the masterpiece that's sitting in front of you - the presentation alone gets 5-stars, it's seriously a work of art. May I talk about the food now!?! I've tried the follwing items and believe me when I say this, each one is a masterfully crafted experience for your palette. It's a mind-blowing sensation of sorts as so many combinations of ingredients mesh seamlessly together. Grilled Octopus - I've NEVER had octopus like this before! Perfectly TENDER octopus with yuzu pepper soy, aji amarillo (Peruivan mild yellow chile) mash potatoes, shichimi tatar and chives Tuna Sashimi Tostada - Don't get me started on the quality of fish here! The Tuna was definitely a Grade 1 (highest quality ranking). Served with corn, wasabi tartar, picked daikon, chopped jalapeño and coriander (cilantro for my Cali friends haha) Snapper Ceviche - I've had a lot of fish ceviche in my day but not like these big chunks. Snapper marinated in lime soy dressing, plum dressing, aji amarillo and topped off with tobiko (cavier).. this is a must try! Salmon Tiradito - 10 pieces of the creamiest, firmest, richest salmon you'll ever have! The salmon is marinated in leche de tigre (citrus based marinade) with a passion fruit and coconut cream sauce that eloquently surrounds the plate and topped with crispy spaghetti squash. You'll literally want to lick the plate to get every last bit of that sauce! Rainbow Sushi Roll - Yes yes yessss! I know what you're thinking - that sounds like a typical sushi roll. It's faaaaar from typical here at Azabu! I watched the Raw Bar chef lovingly assemble this pièce de résistance and was blown away by his technique and attention to detail. Salmon Avocado inside Tuna, Salmon and Hamachi Kingfish outside. Eggplant Tempura - veggie lovers dream! Lightly breaded and deep fried eggplant stacked with hatcho miso and spring onions. Braised Pork Cheek Bun - Azabu's twist on the classic bao! A soft milky bun stuffed with delicious slow cooked pork drizzled with a sweet, tangy tamarind sauce. I wouldn't share this if I were you.

We came by to celebrate a birthday and had booked the wrong day. They managed to get us a table on the spot even though they were already booked out. However, the service isn't the only thing that's great here, the food and drinks are also top-notch. The cocktail menu is quite large and has some interesting ones using different liquors like pisco and mezcal. There were two that really tickled my fancy, East Meets West and the San sora. The East meets West also had a colour change in the glass which was really unexpected. The pandan flavour was also present which is why I enjoyed it a lot. The other few worth mentioning is the Maracuja Meringue which was bruleed at the table and the Margarita de Verde which was almost like a liquid guacamole. The menu is fairly large and has a large selection of interesting items. We opted for the omakase menu. They had a normal one as well as a vegetarian one which was very nice. I had the vegetarian one while everyone else had the normal one. The food was really nice. I particularly enjoyed the dressing for daikon roll since it had a fresh, sweet tanginess to it. The artichoke dumpling was also quite tasty. I wasn't a fan of the teriyaki tofu since it didn't really have a teriyaki flavour but it was still nice. The cabbage was also really nice with the sesame dressing. Of course the tapioca dessert was also really tasty. The sweet coconutty sago with layers of tangy and sweet. Azabu is a really nice restaurant for food and drinks. A really nice place to just enjoy the food and company. It was really busy so booking ahead would be beneficial but they are probably nice enough to squeeze you in too.

This little Japanese x Peru restaurant is very interesting. Their food of was quite nice Really like their wagyu beef skewers, very tender and flavourful. The adobo sauce was so tasty it transported me back to central America. And the bed of potatoes mash was creamy with a hint of spiciness from Shichimi was just right. Their tuna tostada was really good too, the contrast between the crunchy tostada and the fresh tuna sashimi was so good and those corn kernels, little diced cucumber and red onion slices make the whole thing sings. On the other hand, their grilled octupus was a bit too overcooked, the octopus lost it's signature bounciness/chewiness it tasted more like a piece of octopus flavoured poached chicken breast... Flavour wise it was okay, just the texture isn't what I was expected. And their king fish ceviche was really good to look at; the presentation was amazing. However the fish wasn't too fresh, and the jalapeno - yuzu ponzu was a bit of a hit and miss, the bright green colour reminds me of cactus juice which kind of matching the theme of Peru however I couldn't taste neither the Jalapeno nor Ponzu in the sauce. Their dessert was good, I tried the charcoal black meringue. The yuzu sorbet was so refreshing I could have the entire tub if they do sell it in tubs (doubt it). The tiny cubes of pear hiding under the yuzu was also quite nice. The salted caramel miso walnut was interesting, but I'd prefer if that was made into hard brittle candies/shard, it would give it a bit more contrast, but overall it was quite nice. Will be back to try more of their food. Recommended!

2024 May edit: We tried the Taste of Azabu set during Eat, Drink Love Ponsonby and while good, it wasn't as good just normal dining. We had 2 tostada: beef & truffle and tuna. The beef was the clear winner. Then we had 2 cevice: tuna ponzu sesame & white fish pineapple Amarillo coconut cream. Both were nice, nothing memorable. Then we had a scallop temaki. The scallop itself was delicious and sweet, but having it with the rice and nori unfortunately overpowered it and together you couldn't taste much scallop. Then 2 gyozas: pork & prawn. Both also very tasty, but nothing special. Lastly, we had salmon and a pork belly skewer. The pork belly was the preferred over the salmon - but it was a touch sweet. All in all, for 55pp, it was value for money. And a great way to be introduced to Azabu without breaking the bank - which, let's be real, it totally can. That said, I don't think the set really gave you a taste of what azabu had to offer. Separate to the set menu, we added some sashimi for 'dessert'. Food aside, service was great as usual and the atmosphere was lovely. We noted on the booking it was our anniversary and we were given a complimentary matcha ice cream on some match jelly. We also had a fair amount of cocktails. Good to try a few different things, but not my favourite spot for a cocktail. 2023: everything was delicious, with the torched volcanic sushi roll being a fave. Price point per portion is on the expensive end so not a casual dinner night spot. But would go back to celebrate an occasion.

Delicious little Japanese fusion place from the same restaurant group as Amano. We walked in not expecting to get a table but were fortunate enough to find a spot. We tried the lobster tostada, soft shell crab tempura, artichoke dumplings, and rainbow roll which worked out just right for 2 ppl. We walked away satisfied but not full. The lobster tostada was subtle and light, probably the weakest dish we tried. The soft shell crab was fantastic, the yuzu kosho mayo that comes with it was absolutely delicious. I wish I could have this for other dishes. The best dish we had was the artichoke dumplings, it was so light and complex. The mushrooms puree add a wonderful umami to it, be sure to get some with each bite! The rainbow sushi is standard fare however the quality of the fish is what makes it stand far above other places where we've had it. The staff were attentive and able to help guide you through the menu which is always a plus. It was a great meal for an affordable price. I would highly recommend checking this out if you like Amano or other restaurants by the same group though I suggest making a reservation to get a table. If we were to come back again we'd definitely get the softshell crab, artichoke dumplings, and try the volcano roll.

I so desperately wanted to like this place based on the reviews and my love for Japanese food, but this place really fell short. Maybe it’s because I’ve been to both Japan and Peru, but I felt like the dishes weren’t good. The “traditional” ceviche (what the server said, snapper I think) was not at all what you’d get in Peru. It was good but a very, very liberal interpretation of ceviche. The two roles, rainbow and spicy tuna, were not that great either. The rainbow roll had way too much avocado and the spicy tuna roll was not spicy at all... it was just tuna and avocado in the roll with tuna pieces on top.. the only spice was the red flakes off to the side. I paid $75 for these three dishes and can’t help but think it was a waste of money. To top it all off, I sat at the bar and got bad service. I had to wait extra long for a server to come get my order, refill my water glass, and wasn’t even able to check out with him because he was nowhere to be found. The only positive of this experience was that the fish was fresh. If you’re looking for authentic Japanese food with good service, this place isn’t it. If you want expensive, mediocre “fusion” food, then this is your place!
