Been excited to try this place and very happy our city has gotten a second Szechuan place.
First off the food: overall it is really food. The highlight for me was the dumpling dipping sauce and the red meat dumplings. Loads of flavours and steaming hot. Runner up of the evening was the crispy aubergine, so do not skip on that. Spicy pork dishes and spicy chicken with cashew also very nice, and doable spicy for the Norwegian palate.
Big portions and very friendly prices - which is highly appreciated.
The service is attentive, but I think it will get better with some practice and time. We had to ask 3 times to please get five minutes to read the menu before ordering, but they came back a few minutes later every time so we felt a bit rushed. Also asked to clear our plates twice while eating, so we had to both times ask to please finish our food first. Got a feeling they were in a hurry, despite not all tables being filled up. We were told “hope to see you again” while wanting to order dessert, so we sadly had to skip on trying the sweet menu. Got asked if we wanted dessert on our way out.
Where the service can do with some practice time and learning, they do make up in terms of great food! In a few months I’m sure this will be a...
Read moreFood: We’ve been here three times and tried several dishes: Moneybags (very good), Mapo tofu (excellent the first time, but unfortunately much weaker the second time after the recipe was changed), Mala beef (very good), Chili beef (very good), Hui guo rou (okay, but not close to authentic 回锅肉), Kam kon pot (okay), and Sichuan fish (authentic and very good). The flavors were definitely best on our first visit (early August), but during our last visit the dishes had far less spice. We really hope to taste more Sichuan pepper in the future, and that the flavors remain authentic rather than adjusted to the ‘Scandinavian palate’.
Atmosphere: Great atmosphere, although the noise level when the restaurant is full can be quite high. It would really improve the dining experience if the acoustics were addressed, like adding noise-reducing materials to the walls or ceiling.
In conclusion, this is a great restaurant, and with a few adjustments it could be perfect, a place we’d love to return to...
Read moreI’m Chinese, and while visiting this wonderful city, I was craving some authentic Chinese food that reminded me of home. After a quick Google search, Flavour seemed like the best option based on the photos, and it delivered!
I ordered the duck dish. The duck was nicely marinated and skin was crispy, while the side ingredients were fresh and offered some nice contrast to the duck. I also really liked how the menu offered a selection of dishes from different regions of China (Beijing, Hong Kong, Sichuan, and Shanghai).
Inside, Flavour’s ambiance is nice and trendy. The wait staff are very kind and attentive. I was also able to speak both Mandarin and English comfortably with the staff.
You should definitely support this small business—it’s well worth your...
