A tale of two restaurants...
Prinsen: a small, popular and busy restaurant in Oslo. Ægir Brewery & restaurant: a small, popular and busy restaurant in Flåm.
When we arrived five minutes early for our reservation at Prinsen, the man at the desk managed to avoid eye contact for two minutes while he filled up some ice buckets. He then explained that we were early and would have to wait. Five minutes later another man told us that as this is such a popular restaurant it is obviously necessary to wait sometimes (obviously! How stupid we felt). He then asked quite aggressively did we want a table, yes or no? My wife and I looked each and realised this was not the place for us. We gave up our valuable table to another couple who hopefully didn't mind being spoken to like naughty children. We left, feeling that we had probably disappointed these very special restaurateurs.
When we arrived five minutes early at Ægir, we were greeted with "Hey, you must be Marc, welcome! Let's go find your table." The Viking-like maître d' was friendliness personified, the waiter was great and the meal was superb. As we left, Viking man shouted "Bye Marc, it was great having you, have a great stay!"
The moral of the story? restaurants are not just about serving good food, they are about hospitality and making the customer feel valued. While the owner of Prinsen no doubt lies awake at night dreaming of a Michelin star, the people at Aegir get on with providing outstanding hospitality and an experience customers will remember for all the...
Read moreThis is where you should be going if you want really good food in Oslo. The atmosphere is amazing, the service is impeccable and the food is divine!
We had chanterelles for starters it showed us they knew how to make magic out of local ingredients. For the main course i chose the Halibut and my boyfriend chose the lamb. It was flavorful, well balanced and a good portion. For dessert we had my absolute favorite, profiterole with strawberries and mint cream.
I will recommend this place to everyone who is looking for high quality food that is made by professional chefs that are still passionate about their craft.
Edit: tried the new menu, the duck is amazing. And the vannbakkels with...
Read moreWe had dinner here last night and were truly impressed. The restaurant was fully packed, yet there was only one server handling the entire evening — and she did an outstanding job. Having worked in gastronomy myself for over 10 years, I know how demanding such a situation can be, and I truly admire the calm, efficiency, and friendliness she maintained throughout.
As for the food — absolutely delicious! The bone marrow and lamb were the highlights of the evening, both perfectly prepared and full of flavor. Every dish we tried showed great attention to quality and detail.
Despite the busy atmosphere, we had a fantastic experience and will definitely return when we’re in the area again. Highly...
