Let’s start with the name: “Chola” is a racial epithet used by the light skin upper classes, when they refer derisively to a native Peruvian Indian or anyone of mixed race with Indian ancestry, one who has brown skin and compared to them, coarse features. The cholas have always been the servant class, and the ones who go out early in the morning to buy bread for their light skin masters. So it is ironic that this coffee place, located in an upper class white neighborhood, caters mainly to the whities that live in the area, and who are copy cats of a North American Wasp and lifestyle. You will never see a real Chola queuing up for a cup of coffee in this place which costs more than what she makes in a day. It should be renamed to “El pan de la Blanca”. This aside, the coffee is spectacular (americano, straight, no need for fancy foams or tricks!), and the freshly made bread is an art on its own. Crispy crust outside, spongy fluff inside. I missed the plain and simple avocado toast from the original venue, the new version is too fancy (yet the staff gave me the option of fixing an old fashioned order for me, but I decided to try the new recipe just this once). Overall, one of my favorite places in Lima for real coffee, reading, or conversation. The new place is very accessible and cozy. Certainly...
