This review is years over due and I have told this story to many people about this restaurant and Maria the owner. Back in 2004 we visited Peru with my extended family along with my 5 small boys ages 12-6. Due to an unforeseen circumstance the kids and I were told we had to leave the hotel because another guest was coming in even though we had paid for the room. My husband and all other adults had gone out to tour for the day and I was left with the kids. Once we were kicked out of the hotel we had no where to go, no money, don't speak Spanish, and no way to contact my brother in law who arranged the hotel. So I was out in the streets early in the morning with 5 young kids who were hungry and crying. We had eaten at Indio Feliz the night before and met Maria who was the owner and struck up an instant friendship. My only thought at this point was feeding the kids and getting us off the streets as we were as much of a tourist attraction with 5 kids all blond and blue eyed. We walked to Indio Feliz early in the morning and knocked on the door. Someone opened the door and I burst into tears explaining the best I could not knowing any Spanish what was going on. After a few minutes Maria came to the door and welcomed us all in even though they were not opened. She took up upstairs, got us comfortable and made food for the kids and I. We were safe and the kids were fed. I was NEVER so grateful for the kindness of another person as I was with Maria. She was there when I felt I could not do anything for myself in another country with my children. They went out of their way for strangers who were in need. I have often told this story and also used Indio Feliz as a reference for how I treat others in need. THANK YOU Maria and Indio Feliz for being there when I need you most.
PS.....The food is...
Read moreTo say that we were glad that we dined here would be an understatement. En route to Machu Pichu we had a stay at Aguas Calientes and ate at a couple of different places there. No shortage of good places to eat there. Some were nondescript looking and had great food. Others more upscale and also had good food. Bistro Bar Indio Feliz is in it's own category and our favorite in Aguas Calientes. Over the top décor. To say it was vibrant doesn't do it justice. If you've ever eaten at The Russian Tea Room in NYC it's the same fun (with a South American twist) exuberant design. Of course it's nice to have an enchating dining atmosphere, but it means nothing if the food isn't good. As I write this it has a 4.7 out of 5 review status. Lots of good reviews and well deserved. My wife and I had a 5 star dining experience.
Everything from our appetizers, main course and deserts were beyond reproach. Appetizers were Onion soup with Altiplano (a Peruvian cheese) and my wife had Quinoa soup. Both were savory. Yummy. Delicious. Same could be said for our entrees. I had Mango Chicken that had a really nice presentation and tasted every bit as good as it looked. Wife had Trout Cebiche that was a treat. Whoa! was my reaction when the desert I ordered ( Fruit Salad with Ice Cream) came. It was so cool and pretty looking I was hesitant to eat it. It was good! The pics don't do it justice. Ditto for the Isleflottante (Soft Meringue) my wife had. Once again a really nice presentation and great taste. What else to write? Portion sizes were generous. Impeccable service. Eat at your leisure as you are not rushed here. I wish this place was in my neighborhood in Brooklyn because I would literally go there every day to eat....
