I like to be a person who shares positive reviews when possible because I travel quite a bit and I always appreciate knowing where to get a good meal in a new place.
Tunawa is an amazing experience that was thoroughly enjoyable. I had the panko crusted chicken on pasta and while it does not sound exotic by any stretch of the imagination or in keeping with what one would order at the foot of Machu Picchu I can honestly say that was literally the best pieces of boneless fried chicken I have ever had in my life.
My son is a hamburger aficionado. He’s ordered hamburgers on every continent and he does has a favorite and this was not it. He did however name this his second favorite hamburger on earth and honestly 2 out of 1,500 is pretty respectable.
My wife had the Machu Picchu pizza and she also loved it. Thin crust. Not extremely crispy and about six pounds of cheese and toppings. If that’s your thing you will not be disappointed in their pizza either.
If you’ve gotten this far I can tell you that they also have traditional Peruvian dishes with exotic (to us) ingredients. I have no reason to believe they can’t do the same with alpaca, guinea pig, or octopus. After the meal I told our waiter how excellent the meal was and I was absolutely shocked to hear it had only been in business for two months. These guys know their way around a kitchen much too well to have just started cooking two months ago, so I am sure there is another restaurant in town that’s gone downhill in the last two months.
Wait staff was friendly, efficient, polite, and prompt. The service may have actually been better than the food. It was real close.
I have left a few Google reviews in the past, but it’s been a while. This one inspired me to kick the dust off and give credit where credit is due.
As an American the prices were so cheap it made me feel uncomfortable like I was taking advantage of these fine people, but I have not been in Peru long enough to know how our bill compares to the other local places, but if you’re from the USA you e definitely paid four times as much for a lower quality experience, and probably the same for a fast food meal, and our meal included three cocktails.
If you’re headed to Machu Picchu and you don’t know where to start you can start here and check out the lay of the Pueblo from their cool veranda.
In summary: these people deserve your business. I spent twenty minutes of my vacation typing out this review on my phone I was so impressed. Give...
Read moreAvoid these restaurants if you’re visiting Machu Picchu! In Machu Picchu, many restaurants have someone standing outside trying to bring people in. We placed our order at what we thought was a normal restaurant (name: In Machupicchu- CHOCOANDINO), but after we ordered, a man (possibly a waiter) suddenly told us that all the tables were “reserved”, something he never mentioned before, and then directed us to the second floor of a completely different restaurant next door (name: Tunawa). He told us that they are the same.
These two places have different names, menus, and prices. Worse, when we arrived at Tunawa, the waitress had no idea we had already ordered (this lady even told us they didn’t know anything about it), so we had to start all over again.
When the bill came, the prices were different from what we originally ordered. We tried to speak with the waitress, and the manager or owner came out and told us they didn’t know why the man had sent us there. They’re completely different two restaurants.
Just checked Google Maps and the restaurant on the first floor was not even listed on Google Maps. Terrible!!
It honestly felt like a scam, or at the very least, extremely unprofessional. Be careful and skip both of these places if you’re visiting...
Read moreAbsolutely fabulous meal, best we’ve had on our travels to Peru. Everything was beautifully presented, attentive and friendly service by Claudia, and amazing taste. There’s a good selection of meat and vegetarian dishes- my son was thrilled with his tofu saltado- the quinoa that came with it was incredible. Our teenager had some kind of seafood soup and it was great as well. My husband’s beef entree was perfection as well. Highly highly recommend this spot!
The lower floor of the restaurant looks simple and like a cheap typico place, which is what drew us in, but when we went upstairs it was bright and thoughtfully decorated and the menu didn’t really match our impressions of the ground floor. We were intrigued by the menu so decided to stay and so glad we did- it wasn’t what we originally expected but once the food came, we were blown away! All that to say, if you come looking for an upscale fusion meal, don’t be deterred by the ambiance of the different looking...
