mijo was great, one of the better options around poblacion. it’s near a lot of bar finds after dinner, or you can also opt for their in-house cocktails.
we had sisig tacos, spicy salmon, gindara, and bread pudding.
we thoroughly enjoyed their sisig tacos. i think it was flavored just right, but my friend found it a bit salty. imo where i’ve tried lots of sisig tacos, it’s one of the best ones and retains its crunchiness for added texture.
while their spicy salmon was good, i specifically had sisig tacos first so i think it took so much of the taste that when i went for the spicy salmon already, i could barely taste it and there was no kick of spice 😅
the gindara that comes with risotto is good but individually. the smoked gindara with a few drops of calamansi was ok, but very very slightly overdone. we were looking for its taste to blend with the risotto, but didn’t quite make it there. the risotto had a pleasant but very mild/slightly bland flavor which didn’t overpower the gindara but neither did it contribute to the overall combination.
the bread pudding we ended up getting, cause sticky date which was our initial option was out of stock. the chocolate was delightful and the honeycomb bits is a nice touch for texture and added bitter sweetness from the caramel.
we also ended up ordering 2 cocktails: paloma and amaretto sour. the amaretto sour has a solid cherry taste to it, which wasn’t cloying. the paloma i ordered after asking for a recommendation, but i failed to notice it uses tequila which i don’t quite like recently. it was strong but the grapefruit still stands out. good recommendation, and definitely not staff’s fault. it’s my preference i didn’t take into consideration lol.
there were quite a bit of menu items that are unavailable, by the way. but overall, still a good experience from reservation to service. would come back to try their paella and other menu items...
Read moreMijo proved to be a delightful discovery on my first visit, feeling like a hidden gem in Poblacion that deserves to be shared. Their thoughtfully curated menu, while not extensive, speaks volumes about their commitment to quality over quantity.
The food certainly lived up to expectations. We sampled the Iberian Chicken, Sisig Tacos, and Chorizo Fries, each leaving a distinct impression.
The house-made chorizo in the Chorizo Fries was a standout – truly perfect and easily ranks among the best I've ever tasted.
The Sisig Tacos were incredibly delicious ("masarap, masarap!"). The sisig boasted a wonderful crispiness. While they leaned towards the pricier side, the quality definitely justified the cost.
The Iberian Chicken was also enjoyable. However, I found the balsamic dressing on the accompanying side salad to be a bit too tangy for my preference.
Taking advantage of their one-buy-one-get-one cocktail offer, we opted for the Gin Basil Smash. Initially, it presented with a strong citrusy note, but it mellowed out and became more balanced as it diluted slightly.
The service was commendable. Despite being walk-ins, we were readily accommodated by a friendly staff. For those who smoke, they also have a designated smoking area. Additionally, the restroom was clean and well-equipped with handwashing facilities and soap.
However, it's worth noting that parking in the area is quite limited. Also, Mijo is situated on the second floor and unfortunately is not wheelchair accessible
I'm already looking forward to my next visit to explore more of...
Read moreThis restaurant is severly overrated.
We tried their gambas and there wasn't anything unique about it.
Next, we tried the lamb chop paella, and honestly it was quite disappointing to eat paella with overcooked rice at the bottom, especially for a restaurant with an educated chef. If you serve paella like this, it's insulting to the customer, as it is the most important thing that you don't want to happen to your paella. Secondly, the flavors were all over the place that you have to gather them all together in order to experience the taste that they were going for. If you don't get all the ingredients together in a spoon, it will just taste out of place. So you have to consciously eat it to get a pleasant experience. This is sad, to think this is one of their most recommended dishes.
I did appreciate them opening 20 minutes earlier for us early birds at least, and the waiter was quite attentive, so you won't have to worry about the service since they treat customers very well.
I don't know about their drinks (people say it's good, but we don't consume alcohol), but this is definitely not a place to go to if you are looking for...
